Peugeot 3008 common problems, recalls and buying checks
Written by the C4R team from DVSA data and owner reports. Fact-checked 2026-10-08.
At a glance
| Generation | UK years | Main UK powertrains | Buying-guide note |
|---|---|---|---|
| First generation | 2009–2016 | 1.6 VTi and THP petrol; later 1.2 PureTech petrol; 1.6 and 2.0 HDi/BlueHDi diesels; manual, EGC automated manual and conventional automatic; diesel-electric Hybrid4 | An MPV-influenced crossover. Age, electrical condition, diesel use and maintenance history now matter most. |
| Second generation | 2017–2024 | 1.2 and 1.6 PureTech petrol; 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 BlueHDi diesels; manual and EAT automatic; plug-in hybrids from 2020 and 48V hybrid late in the run | The mainstream used choice. Check the exact engine, timing-drive history, emissions equipment and recall completion. |
| Third generation | 2024– | 1.2 48V hybrid, plug-in hybrid and E-3008 electric versions | Still new to the used market. Several 2024–2026 safety campaigns make a VIN-level recall check essential. |
Verdict: the 3008 is comfortable, practical and distinctive, but engine choice and history matter. A 1.2 PureTech with vague oil or timing-belt records is a poor bet; a diesel used mainly for short journeys deserves close DPF and AdBlue scrutiny. Test every electrical feature and inspect panoramic-roof cars for water ingress. For plug-in hybrids and newer third-generation cars, insist on proof that every applicable battery, suspension and software campaign is closed.
Generation and powertrain history: Auto Express, RAC, CarGurus and AA Cars.
Known issues
These are non-recall issues identified in independent used-car guidance or reported by owners and corroborated by at least two independent sources. They do not establish a failure rate, and they do not mean every 3008 will be affected. Related recalls are identified separately because a recall campaign is not evidence that every car outside its VIN scope has the same defect.
1.2 PureTech wet timing-belt degradation
Label: Manufacturer known issue / reported by owners; confirmed recalls cover some cars.
- Affected cars: 1.2 PureTech petrol versions of the late first generation and second generation. Confirm the exact engine and timing drive from the VIN and service information; do not assume all petrol 3008s use this belt.
- Symptoms: low-oil-pressure or engine warnings, unusual brake-pedal effort, loss of power, oil consumption or visible belt deterioration.
- Evidence: Autocar says the oil-bathed belt can wear prematurely and shed fragments that block oilways, while Parkers independently identifies the 3008 among affected PureTech applications and describes debris clogging engine components. The local DVSA file separately contains brake-vacuum-pump campaigns R/2020/326, R/2023/035 and R/2023/045. (Autocar; Parkers)
- Buying check: require itemised oil-service and belt-inspection or replacement records. Check that the specified oil and interval for that exact VIN were followed. Inspect the visible belt where access permits, but do not treat a visual check alone as proof that the oil pick-up and vacuum system are clear.
- Repair approach: investigate any oil-pressure or braking-assistance warning immediately. Diagnosis may require belt measurement, sump and oil-pick-up inspection, oil-pressure testing and checks of the vacuum pump. Obtain a written quotation; no single repair price applies to every stage of damage.
2. Diesel DPF and AdBlue/SCR faults
Label: Reported by owners / used-car guidance; some specific emissions defects were recalled.
- Affected cars: first- and second-generation HDi/BlueHDi diesels, with AdBlue/SCR relevant to BlueHDi versions.
- Symptoms: DPF, emissions, engine or AdBlue warnings; reduced performance; failed regeneration; or a no-start countdown.
- Evidence: What Car? warns that first-generation diesels can need DPF repairs, especially without regular motorway use. Autocar independently reports clogged DPFs and failed AdBlue pumps or injectors on second-generation diesels. Parkers also identifies AdBlue pump and injector blockage or failure as a used-3008 check. (What Car?; Autocar; Parkers)
- Buying check: establish the car's journey pattern, drive it fully warm and scan the engine and SCR systems. A cleared warning shortly before sale is not proof of repair. Ask for invoices for DPF, injector, NOx-sensor, pump, tank and software work.
- Repair approach: diagnose DPF loading, pressure sensing, additive/SCR operation, AdBlue dosing and NOx sensing before replacing parts. Recalls R/2019/136, R/2020/245, R/2020/331 and R/2025/344 address specific DPF, urea-injector or monitoring defects; VIN scope still has to be checked.
3. Electrical, infotainment and parking-brake faults
Label: Reported by owners — not one universal recall fault.
- Affected cars: both older and newer generations, although the equipment and likely causes differ.
- Symptoms: warning lights, lagging or frozen screens, parking-sensor or camera faults, central locking trouble, or an electric parking brake that will not release normally.
- Evidence: What Car? identifies electrical issues as the largest first-generation problem category and says heating and ventilation faults are also reported. RAC separately records automatic-handbrake and rear-parking-sensor reports. AA Cars identifies lagging screens and electric-handbrake faults, while Autocar reports central-locking and dashboard-display glitches on the second generation. (What Car?; RAC; AA Cars; Autocar)
- Buying check: test every screen, key, lock, window, lamp, heater function, parking aid, camera, powered tailgate and driver-assistance system fitted. Apply and release the parking brake repeatedly, check battery condition and scan all modules.
- Repair approach: begin with battery/charging tests, fault codes, software level, fuses, earths and connectors. Do not approve a display, parking-brake unit or control-module replacement without a diagnosis.
4. Panoramic-roof water ingress
Label: Reported by owners / used-car inspections — not a recall.
- Affected cars: panoramic-roof versions, particularly documented on the second generation.
- Symptoms: damp carpets or headlining, staining, musty smells, condensation or water around roof apertures and pillars.
- Evidence: Auto Express reports significant panoramic-roof leaks on the Mk2. Autocar independently tells buyers to be wary of panoramic-roof water ingress, and AA Cars identifies blocked drains as a cause of leaks. (Auto Express; Autocar; AA Cars)
- Buying check: inspect the headlining, pillars, footwells and boot for damp or staining. Check that drains are clear and ask about previous seal, cassette or drainage work.
- Repair approach: trace the entry point before replacing seals. Clear and test drains, then inspect the roof frame, bonding, seals and any water-damaged wiring or trim.
What the MOT data says
C4R’s local 2024 DVSA aggregate contains 140,993 normal Class 4 and 7 Peugeot 3008 tests.
- First-time pass rate: 71.3%, compared with 71.5% nationally in the same dataset.
- Tested mileage: median 55,918 miles; mean 62,546 miles.
Most common recorded failure reasons
| DVSA failure reason | Tests | Share of this model label’s tests |
|---|---|---|
| Tread depth below the 1.6mm requirement | 5,221 | 3.70% |
| Constant-velocity-joint boot split or insecure | 4,803 | 3.41% |
| Coil spring fractured or broken | 4,516 | 3.20% |
| Brake pads less than 1.5mm thick | 4,214 | 2.99% |
| Stop lamp not working | 3,767 | 2.67% |
One test can record more than one defect, so these shares must not be added together.
Common advisories to check before buying
- Tread close to the legal limit or worn on an edge: 32,110 tests, or 22.77%.
- Brake discs worn, pitted or scored but not seriously weakened: 17,561 tests, or 12.46%.
- Brake pads wearing thin: 15,003 tests, or 10.64%.
Method and limits: C4R calculated these figures from DVSA’s anonymised 2024 MOT results. The analysis includes normal Class 4 and 7 initial tests with outcomes P, F or PRS. Pass rate is P / (P + F + PRS). Failure and advisory shares count distinct initial tests for each reason. Model labels are standardised into C4R model families. These are descriptive records of vehicles presented for MOT; they do not control for age, mileage, engine, maintenance or use and cannot predict the condition of one car.

Confirmed recalls in the local DVSA file
The table below is based only on C4R’s local copy of the DVSA Vehicle Safety Branch Recalls Database. A programmatic exact-make/model filter found 54 Peugeot rows covering 53 distinct recall numbers where Make is PEUGEOT and the model field contains 3008. The exact model labels are 3008, 3008 V1, 3008 V2, 3008 V3, 3008 PHEV, 3008 PHEV AWD and 3008 PHEV FWD. Recall numbers, launch dates, manufacturer references and build windows are preserved as supplied. R/2020/326 occurs twice, once for 3008 V1 and once for 3008 V2, with the same dates and is consolidated into one row without hiding either model label. R/2023/035 and R/2023/045 have 2023 recall numbers but launch dates of 13/12/2022 in the source; those dates are shown without correction. Vehicle totals are omitted because campaign totals may cover a broader population than one model variant.

A build-window match does not prove that a particular car is affected or that work has been completed. Check the registration at GOV.UK, then ask a Peugeot retailer to check the VIN and provide the campaign-completion record. Follow any stop-use or stop-charging instruction attached to an open campaign.
Buyer and test-drive checklist
Before viewing
- Match the VIN, registration, engine, gearbox and electrification type to the V5C and service records.
- Run the GOV.UK MOT-history check and recall check. Look for repeated tyre, brake, spring, CV-boot and lighting defects.
- Ask for itemised servicing, not stamps alone. On a 1.2 PureTech, verify oil specification, service intervals and belt inspections or replacement. On a diesel, ask for DPF and AdBlue/SCR invoices.
- Arrange to see the engine completely cold and ask the seller not to clear warnings or charge a PHEV immediately before inspection.
- For a PHEV or E-3008, request a traction-battery condition report, charging history where available and proof that all supplied cables operate correctly.
Static inspection
- Check tyre age, tread and wear across the full width; inspect wheels for damage.
- Inspect front springs, CV boots, suspension joints, brake pads and discs, using the MOT history to target repeat advisories.
- Check oil and coolant levels and look for fuel, oil, coolant or AdBlue leaks. Never open a hot cooling system.
- On a PureTech, inspect service evidence before relying on a visible belt check.
- Test every electrical feature and confirm all warning lamps illuminate at start-up and extinguish normally.
- On panoramic-roof cars, check drains, headlining, pillars, carpets and boot for water ingress.
- On PHEVs, inspect the cable and charge port for heat damage or contamination and confirm that charging starts without a warning.
Test drive
- Start from cold and listen for abnormal timing-drive, injector or auxiliary-drive noise.
- Drive until fully warm. Reject unresolved oil-pressure, braking, engine, DPF, AdBlue, battery, charging or transmission warnings.
- Check a manual clutch for slip and clean engagement; check an automatic for delayed engagement, shudder or harsh changes in normal and low-speed driving.
- Test braking assistance and the electric parking brake repeatedly. A hard pedal, pulling, vibration or failure to release needs investigation.
- Drive over broken surfaces and listen for spring, joint or bush noise; check that the car tracks straight.
- After the drive, rescan all modules and recheck fluid levels and the ground beneath the car.
Running-cost considerations
Costs vary substantially by generation, engine, registration date, trim, wheel size, maintenance and journey pattern.
- Compare fuel or energy use for the exact derivative. A diesel may suit frequent long journeys but is a poor fit for repeated short trips if the exhaust system cannot regenerate properly.
- For a PHEV, calculate costs using how often it will actually be charged; an official weighted figure is not a prediction for an uncharged car.
- Obtain an insurance quote for the registration before buying. Wheel, lighting, glass and driver-assistance specifications can change repair and premium costs.
- Vehicle tax depends on first-registration date, emissions, powertrain and sometimes original list price. Use the current GOV.UK vehicle-tax tables.
- Use the VIN-specific Peugeot schedule for oil, timing drive, gearbox and hybrid-system requirements. Do not apply one interval to every 3008 engine.
- Budget for tyres, brakes, springs, CV boots and diagnostic work. Obtain current written quotations for defects found; this guide does not state universal repair prices.
