Peugeot 2008 common problems & fixes (Mk1 2013–2019, Mk2 2019–present)
Written by the C4R team from DVSA data and owner reports. Fact-checked 2026-10-04.
30-second verdict
The 2008 is a stylish, comfortable small SUV, but the 1.2 PureTech petrol under most bonnets needs proper care. Its oil-bathed cambelt has been the subject of a UK recall on earlier cars, revised service intervals, and a Stellantis goodwill and compensation scheme. A car with on-time servicing, the right oil and documented belt checks is a reasonable buy; one with gaps in its history is a gamble. The electric e-2008 sidesteps the issue entirely.
Generations at a glance
| Generation | UK years | Main engines | Gearboxes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mk1 (A94) | 2013–2019 (facelift 2016) | 1.2 PureTech (non-turbo and turbo), 1.6 VTi, 1.6 BlueHDi / e-HDi diesel | 5/6-speed manual, ETG automated manual, 6-speed EAT6 auto |
| Mk2 (P24) | 2019–present (facelift 2023) | 1.2 PureTech turbo, 1.5 BlueHDi, e-2008 electric; 1.2 Hybrid 48V from 2024 | 6-speed manual, 8-speed EAT8 auto, e-DCS6 on Hybrid |
Known issues
1. Wet cambelt degradation on the 1.2 PureTech — Confirmed recall on some Mk1 cars; manufacturer known issue more widely
- What you notice: often nothing until a warning — a hard brake pedal, oil-pressure light, engine management light or "engine fault: repair needed" message.
- Which cars: 1.2 PureTech turbo petrols in both generations, built up to around mid-2022. The 2024-on 48V Hybrid uses a revised engine with a chain.
- Why: the belt runs in engine oil. Fuel dilution and degraded oil make the belt shed fragments, which can block the oil pump strainer and the brake vacuum pump's feed.
- Fix: belt and associated parts replaced with the latest specification, plus a clean of the sump and strainer if debris is found. Stellantis now runs extended cover (reported as 10 years / 175,000 km for qualifying engines, conditions apply) and a UK compensation portal for past repairs. Typical UK independent garage, 2026: around £400–£600 for a routine belt change where no damage has occurred; far more if the engine has run short of oil.
- DIY difficulty: 4/5 — special timing tools are needed.
- Check when buying: ask for evidence of servicing at Peugeot's revised intervals using the correct oil, and for any belt-wear measurement notes.
2. Oil consumption on the 1.2 PureTech — Manufacturer known issue
- What you notice: low oil level between services, sometimes a low-oil warning.
- Which cars: 1.2 PureTech turbo, mainly pre-2022 engines.
- Why: linked to ring and carbon issues in the same engine family; it also accelerates belt wear.
- Fix: diagnosis at a dealer; may be covered under the Stellantis scheme.
- Check when buying: check the dipstick and the service book for oil-consumption tests.
3. Brake vacuum pump issues — Confirmed recall (Mk1)
- What you notice: a heavy brake pedal.
- Which cars: Mk1 2008 built roughly June 2013 to April 2017 (recall R/2020/326 covers belt material affecting the vacuum pump).
- Fix: recall work at a dealer, free of charge.
4. Diesel AdBlue and urea injector faults — Confirmed recall on some cars
- What you notice: AdBlue warning with a countdown to no-start.
- Which cars: 1.5 BlueHDi.
- Fix: a software recall (R/2020/356) addresses urea-injector blockage; persistent faults may need parts.
- Check when buying: no AdBlue warnings on the dash; recall work done.
5. 1.5 BlueHDi camshaft chain wear — Confirmed recall (software)
- Which cars: 1.5 BlueHDi engines in multiple Stellantis models.
- Fix: recall R/2025/246 applies software to reduce chain wear; ask whether it has been done.

MOT watch-points
What the 2024 DVSA figures say
- First-time pass rate: 73.9% from 132,149 normal Class 4 and 7 Peugeot 2008 tests.
- National comparison: 71.5% across the same 2024 dataset, so this model was 2.4 percentage points above the national first-time pass rate.
- Typical tested mileage: median 44,259 miles; mean 48,819 miles.
Most common recorded failure reasons
| DVSA failure reason | Tests | Share of this model's tests |
|---|---|---|
| Joints: constant velocity boot split or insecure, no longer prevents the ingress of dirt | 8,816 | 6.7% |
| Registration plate lamp(s): inoperative in the case of a single lamp or all lamps | 4,627 | 3.5% |
| Headlamp: not working on dipped beam | 3,978 | 3.0% |
| Wipers: does not clear the windscreen effectively | 2,843 | 2.1% |
| Tread depth: tread depth below requirements of 1.6mm | 2,814 | 2.1% |
One test can record more than one defect, so the shares must not be added together.
Common advisories to check before buying
- Tread depth: worn close to legal limit/worn on edge — recorded on 18.2% of tests.
- Brake discs: worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened — recorded on 15.5% of tests.
- Tyres - condition: slightly damaged/cracking or perishing — recorded on 7.5% of tests.
Method and limits: C4R calculated these figures from DVSA's anonymised 2024 MOT results. Pass rate is P / (P + F + PRS) for normal Class 4 and 7 tests. Results are de-duplicated by test, low-volume rows are suppressed, and DVSA model labels are standardised into a model family. These figures describe tested cars as a group; they do not predict the condition of one vehicle or prove that every trim and generation performs the same way.
