Land Rover Range Rover Sport common problems and buying guide

Written by the C4R team from DVSA data and owner reports. Fact-checked 2026-10-08.

The short verdict

A well-maintained Range Rover Sport is comfortable, capable and complex. A neglected one can be disproportionately expensive to put right. Service invoices, a cold start, a full-module diagnostic scan and an inspection by a Land Rover specialist matter more than mileage or trim alone.

The evidence is strongest for the first two generations. The current L461 is too new for a responsible long-term common-fault list, so buyers should concentrate on condition, software status, warranty cover and VIN-specific recall completion.

Generations at a glance

GenerationUK model yearsBuying focus
L320, first generation2005–2013Age, maintenance quality, V6-diesel engine condition, air suspension, suspension wear, driveline noise and water ingress.
L494, second generation2013–2022V6-diesel engine condition, pre-2019 2.0 SD4 timing-chain history, emissions-system use pattern, air suspension and electrical functions.
L461, third generation2022–onWarranty, software, charging operation on PHEVs and completed recalls; long-term fault evidence is not yet mature.

Land Rover introduced the third-generation model in 2022. The preceding generation windows are corroborated by the Parkers L320 guide, Parkers L494 guide and JLR’s 2022 launch material.

Reported faults to check

These are reported used-car faults, not proof that every vehicle will suffer them. Each item below is supported by at least two independent sources that were retrieved and read for this review. No repair-price estimates are included because the diagnosis and derivative can change the cost substantially.

V6-diesel crankshaft or bearing failure — L320 2.7/3.0 and L494 3.0

Reports cover the 2.7-litre and 3.0-litre V6 diesels in the L320 and the 3.0-litre TDV6/SDV6 in the L494. Warning signs include a deep knock, vibration while held in Drive, a low-oil-pressure warning or an engine that has already seized. Similar noises can have other causes, so a specialist diagnosis is essential.

Arrange a genuinely cold start, drive the car under progressive load and reject unexplained knocking or oil-pressure warnings. Check detailed oil-service invoices rather than relying on service-book stamps alone. Later variants should not be assumed immune merely because changes reduced the reported incidence.

2.0 Ingenium diesel timing-chain wear — pre-2019 L494 SD4

The pre-2019 L494 SD4 is repeatedly singled out for timing-chain trouble. A rattle or knock on a cold start, timing-related diagnostic faults or a Restricted Performance message need investigation. The sources also connect short-trip use and interrupted diesel-particulate-filter regeneration with oil dilution, which can undermine lubrication.

Listen from the first cold start, check the oil level and oil-change records, and have a specialist scan the engine before purchase. Evidence of a later repair should identify what was actually replaced rather than relying on a seller’s description of an “updated” chain.

Diesel DPF, EGR and related restricted-performance faults — L320 and L494 diesels

Diesel versions can develop restricted-performance warnings, poor response or smoke because of faults involving the DPF, EGR system, throttle body, sensors or boost plumbing. Later L494 diesels add AdBlue/SCR equipment. Short journeys are a particular concern because they can prevent a complete DPF regeneration, but a warning message does not identify one part with certainty.

Use a test drive long enough for the engine to warm fully, scan all powertrain modules and investigate stored as well as current faults. A buyer expecting mainly short urban journeys should consider whether a petrol version is better suited.

Air-suspension faults — L320 and L494

A vehicle that sinks at one corner, rises slowly or unevenly, runs its compressor repeatedly, refuses a selected height or displays a suspension warning needs diagnosis. Possible causes include an air leak, compressor, valve block, wiring or height sensor; the same symptom can therefore lead to very different repairs.

Inspect the stance after the vehicle has stood, then cycle access, normal and off-road heights on level ground. All corners should move evenly and the compressor should not run excessively. Do not accept “just an air spring” without a leak test and diagnostic evidence.

Suspension-arm bush and wheel-bearing wear — L320 and L494

Low-speed clunks, vague steering, a road-speed-related rumble and uneven inner-edge tyre wear can point to worn suspension bushes, links or wheel bearings. Large non-standard wheels and hard use can add stress, but the noise must be located before parts are ordered.

Brake gently while moving forwards and backwards to listen for a front-arm clunk, inspect both inner tyre shoulders and check for bearing noise during the road test. Any suspension repair should be followed by an alignment check.

Differential whine — L320

A whine or drone that varies with road speed can indicate differential-bearing wear, although tyres and wheel bearings can sound similar. Test low range as well as the normal transfer setting, where fitted, and listen at a steady speed. Fluid condition and metallic debris can help a specialist distinguish internal wear from another source of noise.

Water ingress, door-lock and electrical faults — L320 and L494

Both older generations have reports of water ingress and locking or electrical trouble. Check the boot floor, carpets and headlining for damp; confirm physically that every door has locked; and test the screens, cameras, seats, windows, tailgate and other powered equipment. On the L494, reported leak areas include the sunroof and tailgate. A weak battery can also trigger multiple warnings, so battery condition should be established before expensive modules are condemned.

Confirmed DVSA recalls

The table below contains every row in the supplied DVSA CSV for which Make is exactly LAND ROVER and Model is exactly RANGE ROVER SPORT, grouped by recall reference. That produces 57 matching rows and 51 unique references. Repeated rows or multiple build windows are consolidated without widening the recorded dates.

A build window describes the campaign scope in the CSV; it does not prove that a particular VIN is affected or that the work is complete. Check the registration or VIN using the GOV.UK recall service or with a Land Rover retailer.

R/2024/326 has a CSV build-start date of 26/11/2002, which predates Range Rover Sport production. It is reproduced as recorded rather than silently corrected. The remedy field for R/2024/100 describes the consequence rather than a repair, so no repair has been invented here.

Running-cost considerations

No Range Rover Sport is a low-cost car to run. Fuel use, Vehicle Excise Duty and insurance vary materially by derivative and first-registration date, so obtain quotes against the exact registration before paying a deposit. Large wheels, high-load tyres, performance brakes, air suspension and complex powertrains can make deferred maintenance expensive. A warranty is valuable only if its written terms cover the engine, suspension, hybrid system and electronics relevant to the car being considered.
