Land Rover Discovery common problems and buying guide
Written by the C4R team from DVSA data and owner reports. Fact-checked 2026-10-08.
At a glance
The full-size Land Rover Discovery is a spacious seven-seat tow car and off-roader, but its complexity makes condition and service history more important than a low purchase price. This guide covers Discovery 3, Discovery 4 and Discovery 5. It does not cover the smaller Discovery Sport, which is a different model with different engines, faults and recalls.
| Model | UK period covered | Used-buying context |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery 3 (L319) | 2004–2009 | Earlier L319; most UK cars use the 2.7-litre diesel |
| Discovery 4 (L319) | 2009–2016 | Major update of the Discovery 3; UK cars are predominantly diesel |
| Discovery 5 (L462) | From 2017 | Aluminium-monocoque successor; early cars include 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 3.0-litre six-cylinder engines |
The periods and model distinction are supported by RAC's Discovery 3 review, Carbuyer's Discovery 4 history and RAC's Discovery 5 review.
Reported faults to check
These are reported faults, not statements that every vehicle will fail. None of the items in this section is presented as a recall. Each is retained only where two independent sources were retrieved and read.
1. Crankshaft and main-bearing failure — Discovery 4 3.0 TDV6/SDV6
A Land Rover service message for the 3.0 TDV6 names Discovery 4 and describes crankshaft or bearing failure associated with rotation of the main-bearing shells. It lists seizure, block or sump damage, metallic debris, a rumbling or knocking noise under load and an oil-pressure warning among the possible signs. An independent Land Rover specialist separately reports the same failure pattern on Discovery 4 3.0 TDV6/SDV6 engines.
Buying check: start the engine from cold, listen for a deep rumble or knock, and do not continue driving if an oil-pressure warning or serious bottom-end noise appears. Service history is useful, but it cannot prove that a future failure is impossible. Diagnosis and repair should be left to a Land Rover engine specialist.

2. Electronic parking-brake trouble — Discovery 3 and 4
RAC reports that the Discovery 3's electronic parking brake can jam on. Carbuyer and Haynes separately report parking-brake trouble on the Discovery 4; the accounts include contamination, brake-dust build-up and poor maintenance around the mechanism.
Buying check: apply and release the brake repeatedly, including on a slope. Listen for screeching and confirm that the brake releases cleanly and holds the vehicle. A fault needs inspection of the shoes, adjustment and actuator system rather than an assumption that one component is always responsible.

3. Air-suspension faults — Discovery 4 and 5
On Discovery 4, Carbuyer reports air leaks and compressor faults, while Haynes identifies ride-height-sensor problems. On Discovery 5, Carbuyer and PistonHeads both report leakage and pump failure. Symptoms can include a vehicle sitting unevenly, slow or noisy height changes, repeated compressor operation or a suspension warning.
Buying check: if possible, inspect the vehicle after it has stood overnight. Check that it sits level, then cycle access, normal and raised height. Uneven or slow movement needs fault-code and leak diagnosis; do not assume that a compressor alone will cure the problem.

4. Electrical equipment faults — Discovery 4
Carbuyer and Haynes both report faults affecting Discovery 4 electrical equipment, including powered windows, central locking and the rear wiper. Some apparently major symptoms can have simple causes, but intermittent faults or several simultaneous warnings need a proper scan and wiring checks.
Buying check: operate every window, lock, wiper, seat, lamp, camera and climate-control function. Scan all vehicle modules rather than relying only on a generic engine-code reader.

5. 2.0 Ingenium diesel timing-chain wear — Discovery 5
Two independent JLR parts and repair specialists report timing-chain, guide and tensioner wear on Discovery 5 models fitted with the 2.0 Ingenium diesel. Reported warning signs include a metallic rattle at cold start, timing-related fault codes and poor running. Both sources warn that a chain that jumps or breaks can cause major internal engine damage; they also discuss oil dilution after incomplete diesel-particulate-filter regeneration as a contributing factor.
Buying check: insist on a genuinely cold start, check the oil level and service invoices, and have an experienced JLR specialist assess any rattle or camshaft/crankshaft-correlation fault. The sources do not justify assigning the fault to every Discovery 5 or to a precise build window, so identify the exact engine before applying this advice.

6. Windscreen or panoramic-roof water ingress and infotainment faults — early Discovery 5
Carbuyer, Parkers and PistonHeads each report water entering early Discovery 5 cabins around the windscreen or panoramic roof. Carbuyer and PistonHeads also describe slow, frozen or buggy early infotainment systems, while RAC reports owner complaints that were mainly electrical or infotainment-related.
Buying check: inspect the headlining, upper windscreen edge, A-pillars and carpets for staining or damp after rain. Pair a phone, use the touchscreen, navigation and cameras, and check that relevant software updates have been applied. Water ingress should be traced and the cabin and affected wiring inspected; simply clearing warning messages is not a repair.

Confirmed DVSA campaigns and recalls
The table below uses only the supplied DVSA recalls CSV. It includes rows whose make is LAND ROVER, whose model is DISCOVERY or ALL NEW DISCOVERY, and whose recorded build start is on or after 28 May 2004. It also includes R/2005/144, whose build dates are blank but whose 2005 launch and Discovery description place it within this guide's scope. The three separate R/2009/051 CSV rows are consolidated into one table entry while preserving every build window.
A build date inside a range does not prove that a particular vehicle is affected or that remedial work is complete. Check the registration with the GOV.UK recall checker and ask a Land Rover retailer to check the VIN.

Buyer's checklist
Before viewing
- Confirm that the car is a full-size Discovery, not a Discovery Sport.
- Record the generation, engine, build date and VIN; do not rely only on the badge or registration year.
- Check MOT history for repeated advisories and obtain evidence that recall work has been completed.
- Ask for itemised service and repair invoices, not just a stamped book.
- Arrange an inspection by a Land Rover specialist with diagnostic equipment that can read all vehicle modules.
Static inspection from cold
- Make sure the engine is genuinely cold before starting it; investigate any serious rattle, rumble, knock or warning light.
- Check fluid levels and look underneath for oil, coolant or fuel leakage.
- Inspect suspension components, brake pipes, tyres and the underside on a lift, especially if the vehicle has towed or been used off road.
- Check that the air suspension sits level and moves evenly through its available heights.
- Check the parking brake and every electrical and infotainment function.
- On Discovery 5, inspect the headlining, windscreen edge, A-pillars and carpets for water ingress.
Test drive
- Confirm that no oil-pressure, suspension, gearbox, emissions, engine or airbag warning remains lit.
- Check that the automatic gearbox engages Drive and Reverse without undue delay and shifts consistently when warm.
- Listen for suspension knocks and check for steering wander, vibration or braking pull.
- Confirm that the parking brake releases cleanly and holds on a slope.
- After the drive, recheck for leaks, hot smells and stored or pending fault codes.
Running-cost considerations
A Discovery's costs vary substantially by generation, engine, condition and use, so a single fuel, insurance, tax or annual-maintenance figure would be misleading. Before buying, obtain registration-specific insurance and vehicle-tax checks, price any overdue engine, suspension, brake or emissions work, and keep a repair reserve appropriate to a complex luxury four-wheel-drive vehicle.
