Volkswagen Polo common problems & fixes (6R/6C 2009-2017, AW 2017-on)
Written by the C4R team from DVSA data and owner reports. Fact-checked 2026-10-08.
30-second verdict
The Polo feels like a smaller Golf, and it shares many of the Golf's weak spots. These are the main ones:
- 1.2 TSI chain engines in early 6R cars, up to about 2014
- the 7-speed DSG on automatics
- plastic coolant housings on later TSIs
- a rear seatbelt recall on early AW cars (R/2018/142, launched November 2018)
A manual 1.0 TSI or 1.2 TSI (belt-driven) with full history is a safe pick.
Generations at a glance
| Generation | UK years | Main engines | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6R | 2009-2014 | 1.2 (3-cyl), 1.2 TSI (EA111 chain), 1.2/1.6 TDI | DSG 7 auto |
| 6C (facelift) | 2014-2017 | 1.0 (3-cyl), 1.2 TSI (EA211 belt), 1.4 TDI | |
| AW | 2017-on | 1.0 MPI, 1.0 TSI, 1.5 TSI (GTI later 2.0) | MQB-A0 platform |
Known issues
1. 1.2 TSI timing chain stretch (EA111)
Label: Reported by owners and specialists. VW revised the chain and tensioner parts.
- What you notice: A rattle for several seconds on cold start. Rough running, engine light. In the worst case the chain jumps a tooth and damages the engine.
- Which cars: 6R 1.2 TSI, about 2009-2014 (the EA111 chain engine). The facelifted 6C uses the belt-driven EA211.
- Why: The tensioner design struggles to keep the chain tight, and the chain stretches.
- Fix and cost: Chain, tensioner and guides, £650-£1,100 (typical UK independent garage, 2026).
- DIY difficulty: Hard.
- Check when buying: Do a cold-start listen. Look for chain-kit invoices.
2. 7-speed DSG (DQ200) issues
Label: Reported by owners and specialists.
- What you notice: Jerky low-speed changes, slow engagement, a flashing gear indicator, limp mode.
- Which cars: Automatic 6R/6C and AW Polos with the dry-clutch DSG.
- Fix and cost: Clutch pack, £900-£1,500. Mechatronic unit, £600-£2,000 (typical UK independent garage, 2026).
- Check when buying: Do a cold traffic test and a slow reverse up a slope.
3. Coolant pump and thermostat housing leaks (EA211 TSI)
Label: Reported by owners and specialists.
- What you notice: Coolant loss, a sweet smell, a warning light.
- Which cars: 6C and AW 1.0/1.2/1.5 TSI.
- Fix and cost: £300-£650 (typical UK independent garage, 2026).
- DIY difficulty: Medium to hard.
4. Diesel DPF and EGR on low-mileage town cars
Label: Reported by owners. This is common to most small diesels.
- What you notice: DPF light, limp mode.
- Which cars: 1.2/1.6 TDI (6R) and 1.4 TDI (6C).
- Fix and cost: Forced regeneration or clean, £150-£400. Replacement, £800-£1,500 (typical UK independent garage, 2026).
- Check when buying: If you mostly drive in town, a petrol is the better choice.
5. AW electrical and infotainment glitches
Label: Reported by owners.
- What you notice: The screen freezes, phone mirroring drops out, parking-sensor faults.
- Fix and cost: Software update, often free at a dealer.
Recalls
These are taken from the DVSA Vehicle Safety Branch recalls database. Build dates are the windows DVSA lists, so a car inside a window is not necessarily affected, and many will already have been fixed. Always check the exact car by registration on the GOV.UK recall checker.
| DVSA ref | Launched | Polos covered (build window) | What it is about |
|---|---|---|---|
| R/2018/142 | 26 Nov 2018 | Built 1 May 2017 to 12 Oct 2018 (early AW) | With the left-rear and centre-rear seats both in use, the left-rear belt's double buckle could come undone; a spacer is fitted in the buckle |
| R/2019/037 | 4 Feb 2019 | Built 12 Oct 2017 to 22 Oct 2018 (early AW) | An adjuster nut could move so the handbrake lever needs more travel to hold the car; it is re-adjusted and a locking device fitted |
| R/2014/144 | 5 Dec 2014 | Built 1 Apr 2010 to 1 Apr 2014 | The fuel filter could crack near its inlet and leak fuel; an improved filter is fitted if needed |
| R/2020/068 | 16 Mar 2020 | Built 8 Oct 2019 to 6 Feb 2020 | Oil could reach the brake servo through the tandem-pump vacuum lines, reducing brake assistance; the vacuum line is replaced |
| R/2021/400 | 19 Oct 2021 | Built 19 Aug 2020 to 11 Jan 2021 | The dash panel's tear-seam net for the passenger airbag may be fitted wrongly; the dash panel is replaced |
| R/2025/208 | 9 Jun 2025 | Built 9 Oct 2023 to 28 Mar 2025 | The front passenger airbag may be faulty and could give reduced protection or break apart if it deploys; the airbag is replaced |
MOT watch-points
What the 2024 DVSA figures say
- First-time pass rate: 67.0% from 632,655 normal Class 4 and 7 Volkswagen Polo tests.
- National comparison: 71.5% across the same 2024 dataset, so this model was 4.5 percentage points below the national first-time pass rate.
- Typical tested mileage: median 60,676 miles; mean 65,680 miles.
Most common recorded failure reasons
| DVSA failure reason | Tests | Share of this model's tests |
|---|---|---|
| Pins and bushes: pin or bush excessively worn | 19,382 | 3.1% |
| Position lamp: not working | 15,829 | 2.5% |
| Tread depth: tread depth below requirements of 1.6mm | 15,419 | 2.4% |
| Wipers: does not clear the windscreen effectively | 13,883 | 2.2% |
| Joints: constant velocity boot split or insecure, no longer prevents the ingress of dirt | 13,632 | 2.1% |
One test can record more than one defect, so the shares must not be added together.
Common advisories to check before buying
- Tread depth: worn close to legal limit/worn on edge — recorded on 18.4% of tests.
- Tyres - condition: slightly damaged/cracking or perishing — recorded on 11.4% of tests.
- Brake discs: worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened — recorded on 8.9% of tests.
Method and limits: C4R calculated these figures from DVSA's anonymised 2024 MOT results. Pass rate is P / (P + F + PRS) for normal Class 4 and 7 tests. Results are de-duplicated by test, low-volume rows are suppressed, and DVSA model labels are standardised into a model family. These figures describe tested cars as a group; they do not predict the condition of one vehicle or prove that every trim and generation performs the same way.
