Vauxhall Zafira common problems, recalls and buying checks (1999–2018)

At a glance: generations, engines and verdict

GenerationUK years coveredMain enginesBuying note
Zafira A1999–20051.6, 1.8 and 2.2 petrol; 2.0 turbo; 2.0 and 2.2 dieselCondition and service history matter most now. Check early 2.2 petrol cars for evidence of the timing-chain campaign.
Zafira B2005–20141.6, 1.8 and 2.2 petrol; 2.0 turbo/VXR; 1.7 and 1.9 dieselConfirm all applicable heater-blower recalls by VIN, then check the gearbox and diesel emissions equipment.
Zafira C / Tourer2012–20181.4T, 1.6T and 1.8 petrol; 1.6, 1.7 and 2.0 dieselMore modern and refined, but a 1.6 CDTi should be heard from a genuinely cold start.

The original Zafira arrived in 1999, the second generation in 2005 and the Zafira Tourer in 2012. There was some overlap between the second-generation car and the Tourer. A well-maintained petrol manual is generally the simpler choice for repeated short journeys; a diesel is better suited to regular longer runs that allow its emissions system to operate properly. On any Zafira B, recall completion is a safety check rather than a negotiating point.

Known issues

1. Zafira A 2.2 petrol timing chain

Label: Manufacturer campaign; not a UK DVSA safety recall in the local recalls file.

2. Zafira B heater and blower fire risk

Label: Confirmed recalls R/2015/245, R/2016/104, R/2018/214 and R/2019/082.

3. M32 six-speed manual gearbox bearing wear

Label: Reported by an independent repair manual publisher and a Vauxhall transmission specialist.

4. Zafira B diesel DPF, EGR and 1.9 CDTi 150 swirl-flap faults

Label: Reported by an independent repair manual publisher and a used-car advice source; strongly dependent on engine and use.

5. Zafira Tourer 1.6 CDTi timing-chain and tensioner wear

Label: Reported by two independent UK aftermarket specialists; not listed as a Zafira safety recall in the local DVSA recalls file.

What the 2024 MOT data says

Recorded failure reasonTestsShare of Zafira tests
Coil spring fractured or broken9,3664.7%
Malfunction indicator lamp inoperative or indicating a fault9,1234.6%
Position lamp not working7,6683.8%
Brake pads below 1.5mm7,3003.6%
Tyre tread below 1.6mm6,4303.2%

The leading advisories were tyre tread worn close to the legal limit or on an edge (24.6%), a non-excessive engine-oil leak (15.7%) and worn, pitted or scored brake discs that were not seriously weakened (13.5%). One test can record several defects, so the percentages must not be added together.

Method and limits: C4R calculated these figures from DVSA's anonymised 2024 MOT results. Pass rate is P / (P + F + PRS) for normal Class 4 and 7 tests. Results are de-duplicated by test and DVSA model labels are standardised into a model family. These population figures do not diagnose an individual car or show that every engine, trim and generation performs identically.

Confirmed recalls from the DVSA recalls file

The local DVSA CSV contains 15 Vauxhall rows whose model information identifies Zafira or Zafira B/C. The dates below are the launch dates and build windows recorded in that file; blank build dates are shown as not stated. A table entry does not prove that a particular car is affected or that its work is complete.

Buyer and test-drive checklist

  1. Obtain a VIN-specific recall check, paying particular attention to every applicable Zafira B heater action and the Zafira C Takata campaign.
  2. Start the engine from cold. Investigate timing-chain rattle on an affected 2.2 petrol or 1.6 CDTi before buying.
  3. Check every blower speed and inspect for hot-plastic smells, heat-damaged connectors or non-standard resistor wiring.
  4. Identify the gearbox. On an M32-equipped car, listen for a whine and watch for gearlever movement under changing load.
  5. On a diesel, scan the DPF and EGR system and check the oil level, warning history and evidence of completed regeneration.
  6. Fold, slide and latch every seat; test all seat belts, doors, locks, windows and heater functions.
  7. Inspect springs, tyres, brake pads and discs, lamps and oil leaks in light of the MOT data.
  8. Check the MOT history against the mileage and invoices, and commission an independent mechanical inspection.
