Skoda Kamiq common problems, recalls and buying guide (2019–present)
Written by the C4R team from DVSA data and owner reports. Fact-checked 2026-10-08.
At a glance
| Generation | UK years | Main UK powertrains | Buying-guide note |
|---|---|---|---|
| First generation (NW) | 2019–present; facelift introduced in 2024 | 1.0 TSI and 1.5 TSI petrol; early 1.6 TDI diesel; manual or seven-speed DSG; front-wheel drive | A roomy small SUV with a relatively short used-car history. Check software-led functions carefully, inspect the brakes and confirm recall completion by registration and VIN. |
Verdict: the Kamiq is a practical and comfortable small SUV, but a clean dashboard and a short test drive are not enough. Exercise the infotainment, phone connection, parking aids and driver-assistance systems, inspect the brake discs and pads, and test a DSG repeatedly at low speed. Its two exact-match DVSA recalls both concern the emergency-call/online-connectivity unit on early cars.
The model history and range were checked against Auto Express’s used-car review, heycar’s Kamiq review and Škoda UK’s current range information.
Known issues
These are non-recall issues supported by at least two independent reputable sources. They do not establish a failure rate, and they do not mean every Kamiq will be affected.
1. Infotainment and other electronic glitches
Label: Reported by owners and reviewers — not a recall.
- Affected cars: reports concern the first-generation Kamiq generally; the sources reviewed do not establish a precise build-date range.
- Symptoms: a slow, frozen or crashing infotainment screen, phone-connection problems, unavailable navigation, parking-sensor faults or other intermittent electronic warnings.
- Evidence: What Car? says its long-term Kamiq’s infotainment was criticised for crashing and reports infotainment and occasional parking-sensor faults in owner feedback. Parkers describes infotainment “gremlins”, while heycar separately advises buyers to check that a used car has received the latest authorised-dealer software updates. (What Car?; Parkers; heycar)
- Buying check: start the car from cold, let every display boot fully, move through the menus, pair a phone, make a call, test smartphone mirroring, navigation, DAB, cameras, parking sensors and every fitted assistance system. Switch the car off, lock it, restart it and repeat the checks. Scan all control modules if a warning or intermittent fault appears.
- Repair approach: establish the battery and charging-system condition first, then check software level, stored fault codes, wiring and the affected module. A reset can hide a symptom temporarily; require evidence of a lasting diagnosis and repair.
This issue is separate from the two official eCall/online-connectivity recalls below. An SOS warning on an early car should trigger both a recall-completion check and proper diagnosis.
2. Brake-disc corrosion or wear
Label: Reported by owners and independent inspection data — not a recall.
- Affected cars: the evidence concerns first-generation Kamiqs, including relatively young examples. It does not identify one engine or gearbox as exclusively affected.
- Symptoms: visible rust, scoring or a pronounced lip on a disc, brake vibration or fluctuation, scraping, reduced smoothness, or repeated disc and pad advisories.
- Evidence: Auto Express calls prematurely corroding brake discs the most common owner gripe in its used Kamiq review. An independent report on TÜV inspection data separately records an above-average brake-disc defect rate for the Kamiq at its first and 4–5-year inspections. C4R’s local 2024 DVSA material also puts worn, pitted or scored discs at the top of the advisory list in every one of its five Kamiq trim labels. (Auto Express; Autohled’s report on TÜV Report 2026)
- Buying check: inspect both faces of all discs where visible, not just the outer edge. Check pad thickness, review the MOT history for repeat brake advisories and brake from progressively higher speeds where safe. Vibration, pulling, scraping or fluctuating effort needs investigation before purchase.
- Repair approach: have a competent workshop measure disc thickness and run-out and assess the pads, sliders and calipers. Normal wear, corrosion after standing and a sticking component can produce similar symptoms, so do not assume a cause from appearance alone.
No additional non-recall fault is presented as a Kamiq pattern here. Claims about DSG failure, TSI engine damage, diesel DPF/EGR failure, suspension wear and 1.5 TSI hesitation were not retained because the research reviewed did not provide two inspected, independent reputable sources supporting a Kamiq-specific fault at the level required for publication.
What the MOT data says
C4R’s local 2024 DVSA analysis does not contain one consolidated skoda-kamiq family file. It contains five separate Kamiq trim/transmission labels, covering 13,730 tests in total. The table therefore preserves those labels rather than presenting a calculated model-wide pass rate or mileage figure that the artifact does not supply.
| Local DVSA model label | Tests | First-time pass rate | Median tested mileage | Mean tested mileage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Skoda Kamiq Monte Carlo TSI S-A | 1,115 | 88.6% | 23,090 miles | 24,833 miles |
| Skoda Kamiq SE L TSI S-A | 3,382 | 89.8% | 22,056 miles | 23,674 miles |
| Skoda Kamiq SE L TSI | 3,193 | 89.9% | 24,222 miles | 26,260 miles |
| Skoda Kamiq SE TSI S-A | 2,205 | 88.7% | 21,445 miles | 23,515 miles |
| Skoda Kamiq SE TSI | 3,835 | 88.7% | 25,563 miles | 26,881 miles |
The national first-time pass rate recorded in each artifact is 71.5%. The five Kamiq labels span 88.6% to 89.9%, but differences in age, mileage, trim mix and use mean that this is not a like-for-like reliability verdict.
Common advisory themes across all five labels
- Brake discs worn, pitted or scored but not seriously weakened: 13.25% to 17.84% of tests, depending on label.
- Brake pads wearing thin: 8.84% to 11.32%.
- Tread close to the legal limit or worn on an edge: 8.60% to 12.26%.
One test can record more than one defect, so these shares must not be added together.
Method and limits: the local artifacts were generated from DVSA’s anonymised 2024 MOT results for normal Class 4 and 7 initial tests with outcomes Pass, Fail or PRS. Results are de-duplicated by test and low-volume rows are suppressed. The source labels include trim and transmission text rather than one standardised Kamiq family, so C4R has not merged failure counts or inferred an overall pass rate from rounded label-level rates. MOT records describe vehicles presented for a statutory test; they do not measure breakdown frequency or predict the condition of one car.

Confirmed recalls in the local DVSA file
C4R matched its local DVSA Vehicle Safety Branch recalls CSV by trimming and uppercasing the fields, then requiring exact equality for Make = SKODA and Model = KAMIQ. This returned 2 rows and 2 unique recall references. A separate search found no other row mentioning KAMIQ outside that exact match. Recall references, launch dates, manufacturer references and build windows below are preserved from the CSV; the defect and remedy wording is condensed without adding other recall sources.
| DVSA recall / Škoda ref | Launch date | Build window exactly as supplied | Defect and remedy |
|---|---|---|---|
| R/2019/376 / 91W7 | 01/11/2019 | 27/08/2019–17/09/2019 | An incorrect dataset in the online-connectivity unit could stop eCall and the information/service call working correctly; replace the OCU control unit. |
| R/2020/086 / 91Y8 | 25/03/2020 | 10/07/2019–07/02/2020 | OCU software could cause the eCall function to work incorrectly; update the OCU software. |
Both matching rows have blank VIN Start and Vin End fields. The CSV therefore cannot show whether one vehicle is affected or whether the work has been completed. Check the registration using the GOV.UK recall checker, then ask a Škoda retailer to check the VIN and provide the campaign-completion record.
Buyer and test-drive checklist
Before viewing
- Match the VIN, registration, engine, gearbox and trim to the V5C and service records.
- Run the GOV.UK MOT-history check and recall check. Look for repeated brake, tyre or electrical advisories and unexplained mileage changes.
- Ask for itemised service invoices rather than stamps alone. Confirm the schedule for the exact VIN, engine and gearbox with Škoda documentation.
- Arrange to see the car completely cold. A pre-warmed engine or recently reset infotainment system can hide symptoms.
Static inspection
- Let every display boot and check for SOS, infotainment, parking-sensor, airbag or driver-assistance warnings.
- Pair a phone and test calls, smartphone mirroring, navigation, audio, cameras, parking aids, climate control, windows, mirrors, locks and every fitted assistance function.
- Inspect disc faces and edges, pad thickness and brake-fluid condition. Read the MOT history for repeat disc or pad advisories.
- Check tyre age, damage, tread and edge wear; compare all four tyres for suitability and even wear.
- Check oil and coolant levels, look for leaks and inspect the battery area. Never open a hot cooling system.
- Check the boot and cabin for damp and confirm that seats, belts and ISOFIX points work correctly.
Test drive
- Start from cold and confirm that warning lamps illuminate and then extinguish normally.
- Check that the engine pulls cleanly without warning lights, persistent hesitation, smoke, overheating or unusual noise.
- On a DSG, repeat gentle pull-aways, low-speed creep, hill starts and Drive/Reverse selection when cold and warm. Pronounced judder, delayed engagement or a warning needs specialist diagnosis.
- On a manual, check clutch engagement, slip under load and clean selection of every gear.
- Brake progressively and then firmly where safe. Reject unexplained pulling, scraping, vibration or fluctuating effort until inspected.
- Drive over rough surfaces, listen for knocks and confirm that the steering remains consistent.
- After the drive, restart the infotainment checks, recheck for fresh warnings or leaks and arrange a full diagnostic scan and independent inspection.
Running-cost considerations
Running costs vary by engine, gearbox, trim, wheel size, registration date, mileage and condition, so compare the exact derivative rather than relying on one Kamiq-wide figure.
- Early used cars can include the discontinued 1.6 TDI; current UK cars are petrol. Match the fuel type to the journey pattern rather than assuming diesel is cheaper for short trips. (heycar; Carbuyer)
- Official economy and emissions differ by derivative and changed with the facelift. Use the exact registration or Škoda’s derivative data, then allow for real-world use. (Škoda UK)
- Vehicle tax depends on first-registration date, emissions and, where applicable, original list price. Check the current GOV.UK vehicle-tax tables.
- Obtain an insurance quote for the exact registration before purchase.
- Confirm the VIN-specific maintenance schedule and applicable time- or mileage-based work. Škoda’s current service information is a starting point, not proof that a used car has been maintained. (Škoda UK servicing and maintenance)
- Budget for tyres, pads and discs according to measured condition. This guide does not give fixed repair-price estimates.
