Nissan Qashqai common problems & fixes (J10 2007-2013, J11 2014-2021, J12 2021-on)
Written by the C4R team from DVSA data and owner reports. Fact-checked 2026-10-08.
30-second verdict
The Qashqai is Britain's go-to family crossover, and most are built in Sunderland. The main risks depend on the engine:
- early 1.2 DIG-T petrols (J11): oil consumption and timing-chain problems
- CVT automatics: judder
- dCi diesels on short trips: DPF and EGR clogging
- J12 e-Power: a 12V battery drain issue, plus battery-management software recalls (see Recalls below)
A later J11 1.3 DIG-T manual, or a sorted 1.5 dCi used on the motorway, is the safest buy.
Generations at a glance
| Generation | UK years | Main engines | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| J10 | 2007-2013 | 1.6 petrol, 1.5/1.6/2.0 dCi | Qashqai+2 seven-seater offered |
| J11 | 2014-2021 | 1.2 DIG-T (to 2018), 1.3 DIG-T (2018-on), 1.5/1.6 dCi | Xtronic CVT auto |
| J12 | 2021-on | 1.3 DIG-T mild hybrid, e-Power | Petrol and hybrid only |
Known issues
1. 1.2 DIG-T oil consumption and timing chain (J11)
Label: Reported by owners and specialists.
- What you notice: The oil level drops fast. Blue smoke, misfires, and a rattle for a few seconds on cold start.
- Which cars: J11 1.2 DIG-T petrol, roughly 2014-2018. Early builds are reported to be the most affected.
- Why: Piston ring and oil-control problems in some engines. The timing chain stretches and the tensioner loses pressure.
- Fix and cost: Chain kit, £600-£1,000. Piston and ring work or a replacement engine, £2,500-£4,500 (typical UK independent garage, 2026).
- DIY difficulty: Hard.
- Check when buying: Check the oil level. Do a cold-start listen. Ask what the oil consumption is between services, and whether any dealer engine work has been done.
2. CVT (Xtronic) judder and slipping
Label: Reported by owners.
- What you notice: Shudder under light throttle, a "rubber band" feel, flaring revs, limp mode.
- Which cars: J11 automatics, and some J12 automatics.
- Fix and cost: Fluid change and software, £150-£350. Reconditioned CVT, £2,000-£3,500 (typical UK independent garage, 2026).
- Check when buying: Accelerate gently from 20 to 40mph and feel for judder. Ask whether the CVT fluid has been changed.
3. Diesel DPF and EGR clogging (1.5 / 1.6 / 2.0 dCi)
Label: Reported by owners and specialists.
- What you notice: DPF light, limp mode, poor fuel economy, rough idle.
- Which cars: All dCi models, especially those used for short trips. The J10 relies more on passive regeneration.
- Fix and cost: Clean or forced regeneration, £150-£400. EGR valve, £300-£600. DPF replacement, £900-£1,600 (typical UK independent garage, 2026).
- Check when buying: How has it been driven? Ask a garage to read the DPF soot level.
4. Rear shock absorbers and suspension knocks (J10)
Label: Reported by owners.
- What you notice: Knocks over bumps, the rear sitting low, a bouncy rear end.
- Fix and cost: Pair of rear shocks, £180-£350 (typical UK independent garage, 2026).
- DIY difficulty: Medium.
5. Tailgate handle clips (J10)
Label: Reported by owners.
- What you notice: The boot will not open from the outside handle.
- Fix and cost: £40-£120 (typical UK independent garage, 2026).
6. J12 mild-hybrid and e-Power niggles
Label: Reported by owners, plus Confirmed recall R/2025/128 (battery-management software).
- What you notice: Messages about the starter-generator, a flat 12V battery after the car has been parked for a while (e-Power), warnings that the radar or sensors are blocked.
- Fix and cost: Software or 12V battery, £0-£250 (typical UK independent garage, 2026). Recall work is free at a Nissan dealer.
- Check when buying: Get confirmation that all recalls and software updates have been done.
Recalls (DVSA data)
These are confirmed recalls from the DVSA recalls database, summarised in our own words. Dates are the DVSA launch date; build windows are as DVSA lists them. Not every car built in a window is affected.
- Confirmed recall R/2025/128 (J12, launched 10/04/2025, built 22/09/2021 to 09/01/2024): a battery-management software fault could make the displayed battery charge jump about rapidly. The fix is a software reprogram. DVSA lists 20,847 vehicles.
- Confirmed recall R/2026/290 (J12 e-Power, launched 14/07/2026, built 08/07/2025 to 20/05/2026): a battery-management problem could bring up warnings, limp mode or a loss of power, and the car may not recover until it has been switched off and left for around half an hour. The fix is a software reprogram.
- Confirmed recall R/2025/424 (J12, launched 20/10/2025, built 04/05/2021 to 17/10/2024): a fuel pipe in the engine bay can rub against its clip and, in the worst case, wear through and leak fuel. Dealers inspect it and fit a protective grommet or replace the pipe.
- Confirmed recall R/2020/220 (J11, launched 14/08/2020, built 28/09/2015 to 03/03/2018): the rear-door child lock switch may not stay set firmly enough. Dealers fit an extra part to the switch opening.
- Confirmed recall R/2017/295 (J11, launched 27/11/2017, built 23/09/2013 to 26/05/2016): the rear right wheel arch liner can rub on the brake hose under heavy load and high speed, which could eventually cause a brake fluid leak. Dealers rework the liner and replace the brake pipe if needed.
- Confirmed recall R/2014/157 (J11, launched 08/12/2014, built 19/07/2013 to 17/10/2014): the bolts holding a factory towbar kit to the car could work loose. Dealers inspect and rework the towbar fixings.
- Confirmed recall R/2009/106 (J10, launched 23/11/2009, built 04/11/2006 to 04/06/2009): a screw in the steering rack could loosen, first causing noise and, in rare cases, a loss of steering control. Dealers fit a locking plate.
- The J10 and J11 have further DVSA-listed campaigns, including other steering-related recalls on early J10s.
- Check the exact car by registration on the GOV.UK vehicle recall checker, and ask the seller for proof that open recalls have been done.
MOT watch-points
What the 2024 DVSA figures say
- First-time pass rate: 69.1% from 573,400 normal Class 4 and 7 Nissan Qashqai tests.
- National comparison: 71.5% across the same 2024 dataset, so this model was 2.4 percentage points below the national first-time pass rate.
- Typical tested mileage: median 65,959 miles; mean 71,149 miles.
Most common recorded failure reasons
| DVSA failure reason | Tests | Share of this model's tests |
|---|---|---|
| Ball joint: ball joint excessively worn | 29,148 | 5.1% |
| Track rod end: ball joint has excessive play | 28,336 | 4.9% |
| Brake pads: less than 1.5 mm thick | 22,625 | 4.0% |
| Position lamp: not working | 21,007 | 3.7% |
| Joints: constant velocity boot split or insecure, no longer prevents the ingress of dirt | 18,684 | 3.3% |
One test can record more than one defect, so the shares must not be added together.
Common advisories to check before buying
- Tread depth: worn close to legal limit/worn on edge — recorded on 18.4% of tests.
- Brake pads: wearing thin — recorded on 15.0% of tests.
- Tyres - condition: slightly damaged/cracking or perishing — recorded on 10.7% of tests.
Method and limits: C4R calculated these figures from DVSA's anonymised 2024 MOT results. Pass rate is P / (P + F + PRS) for normal Class 4 and 7 tests. Results are de-duplicated by test, low-volume rows are suppressed, and DVSA model labels are standardised into a model family. These figures describe tested cars as a group; they do not predict the condition of one vehicle or prove that every trim and generation performs the same way.
