Mazda CX-5 common problems & fixes (KE 2012–2017, KF 2017–2026)
Written by the C4R team from DVSA data and owner reports. Fact-checked 2026-10-13.
30-second verdict
A used Mazda CX-5 is a roomy, comfortable SUV that handles well for its class, but the 2.2 diesel needs care because a clogged DPF can thin its oil with fuel. It suits families who want a sensible, well-equipped car with sharp steering. On 2012–2017 diesels, check the dipstick for a rising level or a fuel smell, ask whether the injector seals have been renewed, and confirm the injector, brake vacuum pump and intake-valve recalls are done. The lower-risk pick is the 2.0 petrol, which RAC Drive rates as fairly dependable; if you want a diesel, choose one with full history, every recall closed and plenty of longer runs.
Generations at a glance
| Generation | UK years | Main engines and gearboxes | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| KE (Mk1) | 2012–2017 | 2.0 Skyactiv-G petrol (163bhp), front-wheel drive and manual only; 2.2 Skyactiv-D diesel (148bhp) with front- or four-wheel drive; 2.2 diesel (173bhp) with four-wheel drive only. Six-speed manual, or six-speed automatic on diesels | SE-L and Sport at launch, SE-L Lux added in October 2013; ride and refinement improved in spring 2014; 2015 facelift brought a 7-inch screen with a rotary controller and optional LED headlights |
| KF (Mk2) | 2017–2026 | 2.0 petrol (163bhp), automatic option from July 2018; 2.5 petrol (191bhp, automatic) from January 2021; 2.2 diesel (148bhp, later dropped) with front- or four-wheel drive; 2.2 diesel (173bhp, later 181bhp). Manual or automatic gearboxes | UK launch July 2017; more safety kit made standard during 2018; larger screen in early 2021; light facelift in early 2022; later petrols are e-Skyactiv G mild hybrids; replaced in mid-2026 by an all-new, petrol-only CX-5 |
Power outputs vary slightly between sources (Mazda quoted PS, reviewers often bhp), so check the exact engine and drive on the car you are viewing. Auto Express and Carbuyer say the KE's engines have no cambelt: they use a timing chain meant to last the life of the engine.
Known issues
1. Diesel oil dilution and blocked DPF
Label: Reported by owners and independent specialists
- What you notice: the oil level on the dipstick creeps up rather than down, the oil smells of diesel, or the engine management light comes on. Many owners do not notice anything until the warning light appears.
- Which cars: KE 2.2 Skyactiv-D diesels, 2012–2017. The sources we found describe it on the first-generation car; the KF uses a 2.2 diesel too, so the same checks are worth doing.
- Why: the diesel particulate filter (DPF) cleans itself by burning off soot on a longer run. When a car mostly does short trips, regenerations are cut short and extra fuel can end up in the sump, diluting the oil.
- Fix: have a Mazda dealer or diesel specialist check the DPF with diagnostic equipment, change the oil and filter, and let a full regeneration complete. Carbuyer warns it can be costly to put right, but none of our sources gives a price, so get a quote.
- DIY difficulty: 4/5
- Check when buying: check the dipstick on a cold engine for a level above the maximum mark or a diesel smell, ask what sort of journeys the car has done, and be wary of a low-mileage diesel that has only been used around town.
- Evidence: RAC Drive's 2012–2017 used review flags DPF clogging and oil dilution on the 2.2 diesel; Auto Express's and Carbuyer's Mk1 used guides both report fuel diluting the oil because of DPF regeneration problems.
2. Diesel injector leaks and oil starvation
Label: Confirmed recalls R/2018/289 and R/2018/288
- What you notice: the oil-pressure warning light together with the engine management light, or the engine stalling. In the worst case the engine can be starved of oil.
- Which cars: KE cars built from 26/01/2012 to 21/01/2016 for both recalls (DVSA does not name the engine, so check by VIN). RAC Drive's injector-seal advice applies to the KE 2.2 diesel.
- Why: DVSA says injector mounting nuts may not have been tightened enough, letting combustion gas leak past the injector and contaminate the oil, which can block the oil strainer. A separate recall covers injector-control software that may not manage the electric current correctly and can cause a stall. RAC Drive explains that leaking injector seals let unburnt fuel into the engine, building up carbon that can block the oil pick-up.
- Fix: the recall remedies are an engine check for contamination, with repair or replacement if needed, plus re-tightening the injectors to the right torque and reprogramming the injector software. Separately, RAC Drive says Mazda recommends new injector seals at the 75,000-mile service and suggests doing them sooner as a precaution.
- DIY difficulty: 5/5
- Check when buying: run the recall check, ask for paperwork showing new injector seals on any diesel near or past 75,000 miles, and walk away from a car with a ticking or rattling engine or low oil pressure.
- Evidence: DVSA recalls data for R/2018/289 and R/2018/288; RAC Drive's 2012–2017 used review.
3. Diesel stalling from a sooted intake valve
Label: Confirmed recall R/2019/187
- What you notice: the engine can stall, or may not restart.
- Which cars: DVSA lists CX-5 builds from 26/01/2012 to 30/06/2018, which takes in early KF cars as well as the KE. Auto Express describes it as a diesel problem.
- Why: soot can build up around the intake shutter valve on the inlet side of the engine. Carbuyer describes it as a valve that helps the engine stop smoothly becoming gummed up.
- Fix: under the recall, the valve is checked and cleaned or replaced, and the software is updated.
- DIY difficulty: 4/5
- Check when buying: confirm the recall is closed. On the test drive, stop and restart the engine several times, including when it is warm.
- Evidence: DVSA recalls data; Carbuyer's Mk2 used review; Auto Express's Mk1 used review, which lists the July 2019 soot recall.
4. Tailgate dropping or a powered tailgate playing up
Label: Confirmed recall R/2017/163
- What you notice: the tailgate will not stay up or drifts down on its own. On a KF with a powered tailgate, it may not open or close properly.
- Which cars: KE cars built from 17/11/2011 to 26/12/2015 for the strut recall. Carbuyer reports a few powered-tailgate faults on the KF, and says they are not common.
- Why: DVSA says water can get inside the strut cylinder and corrode the strut's mounting.
- Fix: the recall remedy is new struts on both sides. Have a powered tailgate diagnosed by a Mazda dealer or specialist.
- DIY difficulty: 2/5
- Check when buying: open the tailgate fully and let go; it should stay put. Operate a powered tailgate several times from the key, the button and the cabin switch.
- Evidence: DVSA recalls data; Auto Express's Mk1 used review on the May 2017 strut recall; Carbuyer's Mk2 used review on powered tailgates.
5. Brake servo vacuum pump wear
Label: Confirmed recall R/2018/236
- What you notice: a brief reduction in brake assistance if you press the pedal quickly at low engine speed.
- Which cars: KE cars built from 26/01/2012 to 21/01/2016.
- Why: DVSA says the vacuum pump may wear early and supply less vacuum to the brake servo.
- Fix: the recall remedy is a modified vacuum pump.
- DIY difficulty: 4/5
- Check when buying: confirm the recall has been done, and on the drive check the pedal feels firm and consistent from a crawl.
- Evidence: DVSA recalls data; Auto Express's Mk1 used review lists the September 2018 vacuum pump recall.
6. Bluetooth, sat-nav and warning-light glitches
Label: Inspection point
- What you notice: a phone that will not pair, or pairs but will not make calls; several dashboard warning lights at once; on some KFs, a sat-nav that will not accept a full UK postcode.
- Which cars: Bluetooth and warning-light reports relate to the 2012–2017 KE; the postcode problem to the KF.
- Why: mostly software. Carbuyer says a Mazda workshop software update often cures the warning lights, and that an update has largely sorted the KF sat-nav problem.
- Fix: ask a Mazda dealer for the latest software and check your phone's compatibility.
- DIY difficulty: 1/5
- Check when buying: pair your own phone and make a call, enter a full postcode in the sat-nav, and make sure no warning lights stay on after the engine starts.
- Evidence: Auto Express's and Carbuyer's Mk1 used guides on Bluetooth; Carbuyer's Mk1 guide on warning lights; Carbuyer's Mk2 used review on sat-nav postcodes.
7. KF fuel pump and exhaust wiring recalls
Label: Confirmed recalls R/2021/435 and R/2021/439
- What you notice: DVSA says the fuel-pump fault can make the pump fail. It does not describe symptoms for the wiring fault, so rely on the recall check rather than the drive.
- Which cars: KF cars. DVSA lists builds from 03/04/2018 to 27/10/2018 for the fuel pump and from 15/05/2018 to 24/09/2020 for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) wiring.
- Why: the impeller in the low-pressure fuel pump can deform, and the SCR wiring harness can be damaged by contamination.
- Fix: the remedies are an improved low-pressure fuel pump, and an inspection of the SCR harness with repair if needed and a protector fitted.
- DIY difficulty: 4/5
- Check when buying: run the recall check on any 2018–2020 KF and ask for dealer confirmation.
- Evidence: DVSA recalls data.
8. Flickering LED daytime running lights
Label: Confirmed recall R/2020/058
- What you notice: one or both LED daytime running lights flicker, flash or stop working.
- Which cars: KE cars built from 11/12/2014 to 08/12/2015.
- Why: DVSA does not give a cause, but the remedy involves new sealing gaskets for the lamp.
- Fix: under the recall, working lamps get new seals and gas-absorbing sheets, and faulty units are replaced.
- DIY difficulty: 3/5
- Check when buying: with the engine running, walk round the front and look at both daytime running lights for flicker.
- Evidence: DVSA recalls data.
Recalls (DVSA data)
These are the Mazda CX-5 records in the DVSA recalls file, summarised in C4R's own words. Launch dates and build windows are copied from the file. R/2021/435 also covers other Mazda models (Mazda2, Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-3 and MX-5) with different build windows; only the CX-5 window is shown. The file has no duplicate CX-5 rows and no end date before a start date. Not every car built in a window is necessarily affected, so check the exact car by registration and VIN.
| DVSA ref | Launch date | Build window | Summary |

| R/2018/236 | 17/09/2018 | 26/01/2012–21/01/2016 | Brake vacuum pump can wear early, briefly reducing brake assistance; fit a modified pump |
| R/2018/288 | 17/09/2018 | 26/01/2012–21/01/2016 | Injector-control software may mismanage current, risking a short circuit and a stall; reprogram the software |
| R/2018/289 | 17/09/2018 | 26/01/2012–21/01/2016 | Injector nuts may be under-tightened, letting gas contaminate the oil and block the strainer; inspect the engine and re-torque the injectors |
| R/2017/163 | 31/05/2017 | 17/11/2011–26/12/2015 | Water can corrode the tailgate struts so the tailgate may drop; replace both struts |
Run the GOV.UK vehicle recall check and ask a Mazda dealer to check the VIN for completed and outstanding campaigns.
MOT watch-points
- Engine warning light: an engine management light that is on, or does not work, is a major MOT failure. On a diesel CX-5 it can be the first sign of the DPF and oil-dilution problem above.
- DPF and smoke: a missing or tampered-with DPF is a major failure, and so is visible smoke from a car fitted with one. Ask whether the DPF has ever been removed or "deleted"; if it has, walk away.
- Diesel smoke test: the tester measures smoke with the engine at normal running temperature, against the limit on the car's plate, or a default limit if no plate value is recorded. Make sure the engine pulls cleanly without smoke on the test drive.
- Brakes: RAC Drive advises checking the pads and discs, so look for scored or lipped discs and read the MOT history for brake advisories.
- Lights: check every lamp, including the LED daytime running lights on 2014–2015 builds covered by R/2020/058.
- Tyres: Auto Express and Carbuyer say road noise depends a lot on the tyres fitted, so note the brand and check tread depth, cracking and that each axle has a matching pair.

Buying one? Our checklist
- Run the registration through the GOV.UK recall checker and ask a Mazda dealer to confirm every campaign is closed, especially the 2018 injector and vacuum-pump recalls on 2012–2016 builds.
- On a diesel, check the dipstick on a cold engine: a level above maximum or a diesel smell is a red flag.
- Ask what journeys the car has done; a diesel that has mostly done short trips is the riskiest buy.
- On any diesel near or past 75,000 miles, ask for proof that the injector seals have been renewed.
- Read the MOT history for brake, tyre and emissions advisories and for a mileage that rises steadily.
- Start the engine from cold and listen for rattles or ticking, then make sure no warning lights stay on.
- On the drive, stop and restart several times, check the brake pedal feels firm from low speed, and on an automatic check for smooth changes.
- Open the tailgate fully and let go; test a powered tailgate several times.
- Pair your phone, make a call and, on a KF, enter a full postcode into the sat-nav.
- Look for a full service history at 12-month intervals. On Soul Red Crystal cars, check for mismatched repaired panels, because Carbuyer says that colour is hard to match.
Running costs
- Vehicle tax: cars first registered before 1 April 2017 (most KE cars) are taxed by CO2 band. Cars registered from 1 April 2017 pay the standard rate, £200 a year at the time of writing, plus £440 a year for five years (from the second tax payment) if the list price was over £40,000. Check the exact figure on GOV.UK.
- Insurance: Auto Express and Carbuyer both quote groups 15 (entry petrol) to 21 (most powerful diesel) for the CX-5. Get a quote for the exact car.
- Fuel economy: RAC Drive gives official figures of 47.1mpg for the KE 2.0 petrol, 61.4mpg for the front-wheel-drive manual diesel and 51.4mpg for the 175hp four-wheel-drive automatic. Auto Express suggests about 50mpg is a realistic target for the front-wheel-drive diesel. For the KF, Carbuyer's used review quotes 44mpg for the 2.0 petrol, 35mpg for the 2.5 and 49 to 57mpg for the 148bhp diesel depending on gearbox and drive.
- Servicing: every 12 months or 12,000 miles on the KE, with brake fluid every two years; every 12 months or 12,500 miles on the KF. Carbuyer quotes about £450 for the KF's 75,000-mile service.
- Warranty: Mazda gave three years or 60,000 miles when new, so check whether any cover is left on a late KF; older cars will be out of it.
