Kia Picanto common problems & fixes (2011–2017, 2017 on)

Written by the C4R team from DVSA data and owner reports. Fact-checked 2026-10-04.

30-second verdict

The Picanto is about as low-stress as used cars get. Its engines are proven, it costs little to insure and tax, and newer examples may still have some of Kia's seven-year warranty left. Faults tend to be small: clutch judder on manuals, electric windows and locking, and the odd air-con niggle. The main thing to check is that a cheap car has not been run on the cheap, so look closely at tyres, brakes and the service book.

Known issues

1. Clutch judder and high bite point — Reported by owners, noted in UK reliability reviews

2. Electric windows and central locking — Reported by owners

3. Timing chain tensioner noise — Reported by owners

4. Charging problems on older cars — Reported by owners

Dimming lights or a battery warning on high-mileage Mk2 cars can point to a worn alternator. Typical UK independent garage, 2026: £250–£450 for a replacement alternator fitted. Test the battery and charging voltage first; a tired battery is the commoner and cheaper cause.

5. Air-con and trim rattles — Reported by owners

A few owners report weak air-con and rattles from the doors on early Mk2 cars. Run the air-con on full cold, and listen on a rough road.

6. Front daytime running lights (Mk3) — Seen in MOT data

DVSA MOT results analysed by others suggest front daytime running lamp failures show up unusually often on some recent Picantos. Check every light before buying and before the MOT. We will confirm this with our own analysis.

Common advisories to check before buying

Method and limits: C4R calculated these figures from DVSA's anonymised 2024 MOT results. Pass rate is P / (P + F + PRS) for normal Class 4 and 7 tests. Results are de-duplicated by test, low-volume rows are suppressed, and DVSA model labels are standardised into a model family. These figures describe tested cars as a group; they do not predict the condition of one vehicle or prove that every trim and generation performs the same way.

Third-party analysis of DVSA MOT data shows front tyre condition as the most common first-attempt failure on young Picantos, with lamps also prominent. On older cars, add rear brakes, the handbrake, springs and exhaust condition to your pre-MOT checks.
