Jaguar XE common problems and buying guide (2015–2024)

Written by the C4R team from DVSA data and owner reports. Fact-checked 2026-10-08.

At a glance

The Jaguar XE is a compact executive saloon sold from 2015 to 2024. Cars from the 2019 facelift have a substantially revised interior and infotainment system. The XE can be an appealing used buy, but diesel timing-chain and particulate-filter problems make service history and the car's previous use especially important.

Known faults

1. Timing-chain wear on 2.0-litre diesel models

Label: Reported by owners and specialists.

2. Diesel particulate filter blockage and oil dilution

Label: Reported by owners and specialists.

3. Infotainment and Bluetooth faults

Label: Reported by owners.

Confirmed DVSA recall and campaign records

The table below contains every row where the supplied DVSA recalls CSV identifies the make as JAGUAR and the model as XE. The dates are the build windows recorded in that file, not a statement that every XE built during a window is affected. Check the car's VIN with Jaguar or the GOV.UK recall checker.

R/2016/03724/03/201604/11/2014 to 25/02/2016The low-pressure fuel-feed hose may detach from the filter, causing a fuel leak, engine cut-out and eventual loss of brake assistance after the vacuum reserve is depleted. The remedy is a retaining clip at the hose joint.
R/2016/06805/05/201622/09/2015 to 23/03/2016An incorrectly connected restraints control module may prevent the driver's seat-belt pretensioner from deploying. The connector is rewired.
R/2017/00431/12/201616/02/2016 to 16/12/2016The seat-belt pretensioner initiator may not work correctly. Affected pretensioners are checked and replaced where required.
R/2016/29709/02/201706/10/2014 to 30/06/2015A diesel fuel cooler may leak, creating road and fire hazards. The cooler is replaced.
R/2017/14319/05/201701/11/2016 to 06/04/2017The fuel-return hose may leak, with a possible fire or road-surface hazard. The hose is replaced.
R/2017/29131/10/201701/09/2016 to 17/08/2017A software fault may make the instrument cluster go blank intermittently. Updated software is installed.
R/2018/03529/03/201801/09/2016 to 17/08/2017Inconsistent brazing may allow the fuel rail end caps to leak. The fuel rail is replaced.
R/2019/04815/03/201909/11/2016 to 05/07/2018Vehicles may not routinely achieve the required CO2-emissions level. The remedy is updated software.
R/2019/04729/08/201910/10/2014 to 20/11/2018Vehicles may not routinely achieve the required CO2-emissions level. The remedy includes hardware and software changes.
R/2021/13621/04/202117/05/2016 to 04/09/2017A rear rail assembly fitted during an aftermarket repair may lack the specified structural strength. Replacement parts are installed to the required aftermarket welding standard.
R/2021/23025/06/202125/11/2019 to 16/04/2021The rubberised fuel-return hose assembly may have been made incorrectly. Its date code is inspected and the pipe is replaced where necessary.
R/2024/20707/06/202427/11/2019 to 24/04/2024Insufficient clamp load may allow the turbocharger oil-feed pipe to loosen and leak. The O-rings are renewed and an additional clamp is fitted.
R/2025/48802/12/202503/09/2014 to 17/06/2019This is a security-guidance campaign, not a vehicle-fault repair. Registered keepers are sent theft-prevention guidance; the CSV states that there is no repair action.

Buyer's checklist and test drive

  1. Start a diesel from cold and listen for persistent chain rattle or knocking.
  2. Check the oil level before the drive. A rising or overfull level on a diesel needs investigation.
  3. Look for exhaust-filter warnings and ask how the car has normally been used; repeated short journeys are a poor match for a diesel particulate filter.
  4. Test the infotainment, Bluetooth, navigation, audio, cameras, warning lights, keys and driver-assistance functions.
  5. Check the service invoices rather than relying on a stamped book alone.
  6. Check the individual car's MOT history, then confirm outstanding recalls by VIN.
