Citroen C3 common problems & fixes (Mk2 2009–2016, Mk3 2016–2024)
Written by the C4R team from DVSA data and owner reports. Fact-checked 2026-10-04.
30-second verdict
The C3 is comfy, roomy for its size and cheap to buy used. The big question on any petrol C3 from about 2013 onwards is the 1.2 PureTech engine and its oil-bathed ("wet") timing belt. Look after one with frequent oil changes of the right grade and an on-time belt change, and it is a sensible small car. Buy one with a patchy history and you are gambling. Diesels bring their own AdBlue and DPF upkeep.
Generations at a glance

Known issues
1. Wet timing belt, 1.2 PureTech — Confirmed recall R/2020/327 (some 2013–2017 turbo engines); wider failures reported by owners
- What you notice: an oil-pressure warning that flickers on braking or cornering, an "engine fault, repair needed" message, poor braking assistance, or black specks of rubber on the dipstick or in the oil filler.
- Which cars: 1.2 PureTech petrols in the C3 from about 2013 to 2024, both turbo (110) and non-turbo (68–83). The recall covers turbo engines built 20 March 2013 to 1 April 2017.
- Why: the cambelt runs in engine oil. Fuel getting into the oil (worst on short, cold journeys) and the wrong oil degrade the belt. It sheds debris that can block the oil pickup and the brake vacuum pump feed.
- Fix: belt, tensioner, oil pickup strainer and often the vacuum pump, plus a full oil change with the correct specification. Typical UK independent garage, 2026: £600–£1,100 for a belt kit with pickup clean or replacement; engine replacement if starved of oil runs into several thousand pounds.
- DIY difficulty: 5/5 (special locking tools).
- Check when buying: ask for the belt change invoice and oil changes every year or 10,000 miles at most; check the dipstick for debris. Stellantis has run a UK compensation scheme for some wet-belt and oil-consumption costs, so a previous owner may have claimed: ask.
2. High oil consumption, 1.2 PureTech — Reported by owners
- What you notice: the oil level dropping between services, sometimes with a low-oil warning.
- Why: carbon build-up on the piston oil-control rings stops them scraping oil off the bores; short trips make it worse.
- Fix: check consumption over a set mileage; decarbonising or, in bad cases, piston and ring work. Costs range from a £100–£250 cleaning service to a major engine repair.
- Check when buying: ask how often it needs topping up and look at the oil level.
3. AdBlue faults, BlueHDi diesels (Mk3) — Reported by owners and AdBlue specialists
- What you notice: an AdBlue warning with a countdown in miles before the engine will not restart, often after a top-up.
- Why: crystallised AdBlue blocks the injector, the in-tank pump fails, or a NOx sensor goes faulty.
- Fix: diagnose before replacing anything. Typical UK independent garage, 2026: £100–£200 for diagnosis and reset; £300–£600 for an injector or NOx sensor; £800–£1,500 for a tank and pump unit.
- Check when buying: no AdBlue warning or countdown on the dash; ask for any AdBlue invoices.
4. DPF blockage, diesels — Reported by owners
Short-trip diesels clog their particulate filter. Symptoms are a warning light and limp mode. Typical UK independent garage, 2026: £150–£300 for a forced regeneration and clean; £800+ for a replacement filter. Buy a diesel only if your driving includes regular longer runs.
5. EAT6 and ETG/EGS automatic gearboxes — Reported by owners
The older ETG/EGS automated manual (Mk2) is slow and jerky by design and wears its clutch. The EAT6 torque-converter auto in the Mk3 is better, but owners report hesitant or jerky shifts that sometimes improve with a software update or fluid service. Drive any automatic from cold.
6. Airbump panels and trim — Reported by owners
The soft plastic Airbump panels on Mk3 doors can peel, crack or wear where a front door rubs a rear one. It is cosmetic, but replacement panels cost money. Look along both sides.
Recalls (DVSA data)
Listed against the C3 in DVSA recall data. Some apply only to certain build dates or the newest C3, so check the car's own registration at gov.uk/check-vehicle-recall.
- R/2020/327 — brake vacuum pump may be affected by material from the timing belt; C3 with 1.2 turbo PureTech built 20/03/2013–01/04/2017. Remedy: software update, belt and vacuum pump check and replacement if needed.
- R/2025/021 and R/2025/022 — Takata airbag replacement campaigns (older C3s). Treat any outstanding airbag recall as urgent.
- R/2025/142 — front seat belt pretensioner wires swapped in the airbag ECU connector; C3 built 16/11/2024–25/02/2025.
- Further 2025–2026 recalls on the latest C3 include brake pedal bracket, power steering harness and software campaigns.
MOT watch-points
What the 2024 DVSA figures say
- First-time pass rate: 64.7% from 194,722 normal Class 4 and 7 Citroen C3 tests.
- National comparison: 71.5% across the same 2024 dataset, so this model was 6.8 percentage points below the national first-time pass rate.
- Typical tested mileage: median 57,884 miles; mean 63,066 miles.
Most common recorded failure reasons
| DVSA failure reason | Tests | Share of this model's tests |
|---|---|---|
| Stop lamp: not working | 8,683 | 4.5% |
| Joints: constant velocity boot split or insecure, no longer prevents the ingress of dirt | 7,618 | 3.9% |
| Position lamp: not working | 7,572 | 3.9% |
| Coil spring: fractured or broken | 6,427 | 3.3% |
| Ball joint: ball joint excessively worn | 6,181 | 3.2% |
One test can record more than one defect, so the shares must not be added together.
Common advisories to check before buying
- Tread depth: worn close to legal limit/worn on edge — recorded on 18.6% of tests.
- Brake discs: worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened — recorded on 14.0% of tests.
- Tyres - condition: slightly damaged/cracking or perishing — recorded on 12.0% of tests.
Method and limits: C4R calculated these figures from DVSA's anonymised 2024 MOT results. Pass rate is P / (P + F + PRS) for normal Class 4 and 7 tests. Results are de-duplicated by test, low-volume rows are suppressed, and DVSA model labels are standardised into a model family. These figures describe tested cars as a group; they do not predict the condition of one vehicle or prove that every trim and generation performs the same way.
