BMW X5 common problems & fixes (E70 2007–2013, F15 2013–2018, G05 2018 on)
Written by the C4R team from DVSA data and owner reports. Fact-checked 2026-10-13.
30-second verdict
A used BMW X5 is a big, upmarket family SUV, but check its recall history, rear air springs, xDrive transfer case and electrics carefully before you buy one. Many E70s and F15s are covered by front-airbag inflator recalls, and many 2013–2020 diesels by EGR cooler fire-risk campaigns, so ask a BMW dealer for a VIN printout. E70 diesels add swirl-flap, timing-chain and DPF risks. In What Car?'s 2026 reliability survey, petrol and plug-in hybrid G05s proved far more dependable than diesels. The safest picks are a petrol G05 such as the xDrive40i, or an xDrive45e or 50e if you can charge at home. If you need a diesel for towing, choose a late F15 or G05 xDrive30d with every recall closed, a full history and four matching tyres.
Generations at a glance
| Generation | UK years | Main engines and gearboxes | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| E70 | 2007–2013 | Diesels: 3.0d (later xDrive30d) and twin-turbo 3.0sd (later xDrive35d); after the 2010 facelift xDrive30d, xDrive40d and, from 2012, M50d. Known issues
1. Front airbag inflator recalls (E70 and F15)
Label: Confirmed recall R/2023/224 (plus R/2023/016, R/2024/403 and R/2025/349)
- What you notice: nothing in normal driving. DVSA says the airbags could deploy too forcefully and throw metal fragments into the cabin.
- Which cars: E70s built 07/12/2006–26/06/2013 (R/2023/224, both front airbags); X5s built 12/06/2013–02/09/2017 and X5 Ms built 25/08/2014–01/09/2017 (R/2023/016, driver airbag); 2013–2017 builds that may have had a recalled Takata driver airbag fitted in a repair (R/2024/403); imported X5s still carrying recalled Takata airbags (R/2025/349).
- Why: per DVSA, ageing propellant in the R/2023/016 inflators can burn too aggressively and split the inflator; the other records describe the same risk.
- Fix: free BMW dealer recall work to check and replace the affected airbag modules.
- DIY difficulty: 5/5 (dealer-only safety work)
- Check when buying: run the GOV.UK recall check and get a BMW dealer VIN printout, especially on imported or crash-repaired cars.
- Evidence: DVSA recall records R/2023/224, R/2023/016, R/2024/403 and R/2025/349.
2. EGR cooler fire-risk recalls (2013–2020 diesels)
Label: Confirmed recall R/2022/206 (plus R/2018/258, R/2018/341, R/2021/037, R/2021/213 and R/2022/255)
- What you notice: often nothing; unexplained coolant loss, a burning smell, engine-bay smoke or a warning light needs checking at once.
- Which cars: F15 diesels: Which? lists X5 25d, 30d and 40d models built April 2013 to June 2017, and the DVSA windows run to 30/06/2018. R/2022/255 adds a software campaign for X5 diesels built 18/03/2018–25/07/2020, taking in late F15s and early G05s.
- Why: coolant leaking inside the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler can mix with soot and oil into deposits that may smoulder; Autocar reported BMW saying this could, very rarely, melt the intake manifold.
- Fix: free dealer work: an endoscope inspection, a new EGR cooler or module, or a software update that spots leaks sooner.
- DIY difficulty: 5/5 (dealer-only safety work)
- Check when buying: ask for a BMW printout showing every EGR campaign closed, check the coolant level cold and ask whether it needs regular topping up.
- Evidence: DVSA records above; Autocar's 2018 report on BMW recalling 268,000 UK diesels; Which?'s 2019 report on the extended campaign; Auto Express's used F15 guide.
3. xDrive transfer case shudder and mismatched tyres
Label: Manufacturer technical bulletin/known issue
- What you notice: shudder, jerking or vibration when pulling away, cornering slowly or accelerating at motorway speeds. BMW notes there may be no warning light.
- Which cars: all xDrive X5s. BMW bulletin SI B27 04 15 (2015) names the E70 and F15; SIB 27 02 20 covers the G05 and later X5 M. Mismatched or unevenly worn tyres put any X5 at risk.
- Why: BMW's E70/F15 bulletin lists the engine, wheels and tyres, suspension or worn transfer-case clutch plates as possible causes; its G05 bulletin blames uneven or wrongly fitted tyres, or factory transfer-case oil below BMW's specification. What Car? says big tread differences across an axle upset the E70's xDrive.
- Fix: sort the tyres first (correct size and make, similar tread), then a BMW-level transfer-case check. Once tyres are ruled out, BMW's G05 fix is a transfer-case oil change, after which the new oil needs a minimum distance of driving to bed in; a worn unit needs repair or replacement.
- DIY difficulty: 4/5
- Check when buying: on tarmac, make slow full-lock turns both ways, pull away gently and accelerate steadily from about 30mph. Check all four tyres match.
- Evidence: BMW bulletins SI B27 04 15 and SIB 27 02 20 (US copies filed with NHTSA); What Car?'s E70 reliability review.
4. Sagging rear air suspension
Label: Reported by owners and independent specialists
- What you notice: the rear sits low or leans after standing overnight, then rises as the compressor runs; a suspension warning; a compressor that runs often or sounds laboured.
- Which cars: best documented on E70s with rear self-levelling air suspension (not every car has it). Give any F15 or G05 with air suspension the same check; Auto Express says it is standard on the G05 xLine.
- Why: the rubber air springs perish and leak with age. A BMW specialist quoted by Autocar warns the compressor can mask a slow leak until it burns out, doubling the bill.
- Fix: find the leak (spring, pipe or valve) with a leak test, replace leaking springs and check the compressor rather than just re-inflating.
- DIY difficulty: 3/5
- Check when buying: see the car after it has stood for several hours, compare rear ride height side to side, listen for the compressor and ask for air-suspension invoices.
- Evidence: What Car?'s E70 reliability review names the rear air springs a known weak point; Autocar's E70 buying guide quotes a BMW specialist on perished bags and burnt-out pumps; owners on the XOutpost forum describe E70 rear ends deflating overnight.
5. Swirl flaps, timing chain and DPF (E70 diesels)
Label: Reported by owners and independent specialists
- What you notice: chain rattle for a few seconds after a cold start; poor starting, rough running or smoke; repeated diesel particulate filter (DPF) warnings.
- Which cars: E70 diesels: swirl flaps on early, pre-facelift engines, chain rattle on facelifted (2010–2013) engines and DPF failure on later, high-mileage cars.
- Why: the small inlet-manifold flaps can break up and be swallowed by the engine (Autocar says even a revised part failed); chains, guides and tensioners wear; DPFs block with age, and Autocar warns a failed one can even melt the manifold.
- Fix: replace swirl flaps with an uprated part as preventive work; renew a worn chain, guides and tensioner; find the cause of DPF trouble before cleaning or replacing the filter.
- DIY difficulty: 4/5
- Check when buying: ask the seller not to start the car before you arrive, listen at start-up and look for swirl-flap, chain or DPF invoices. Walk away from smoke or limp-home mode.
- Evidence: Autocar's E70 buying guide; Prestige German Engines, a UK BMW engine specialist that lists X5 M57 and N57 diesels among the engines it repairs after timing-chain failure, and names swirl-flap failure as another cause of engine damage.
6. Abrupt or slipping six-speed automatic (E70)
Label: Reported by owners and independent specialists
- What you notice: thumps or abrupt changes, flaring revs between gears, slipping or judder at low speed.
- Which cars: E70s with the six-speed automatic, which includes every pre-facelift (2007–2010) car; on a facelifted car, check which gearbox it has.
- Why: What Car? rates the gearbox as long-lived but says early cars needed a software update to cure an abrupt shift. Autocar lists torque converter, mechatronic and clutch-pack faults, and says the gearbox thrives on up-to-date software.
- Fix: BMW-level diagnosis first; software cures some shift complaints, while mechanical faults mean mechatronic, converter or gearbox repair.
- DIY difficulty: 4/5
- Check when buying: drive from cold and fully warm, try gentle and full-throttle changes and creep in traffic. Autocar also says to confirm a front-propshaft recall on early cars; the DVSA file has no matching X5 record, so ask BMW about service campaigns too.
- Evidence: What Car?'s E70 reliability review; Autocar's E70 buying guide.
7. Water leaks, rattles and electrical glitches
Label: Reported by owners and independent specialists
- What you notice: a damp driver's-side carpet, water inside the rear lights, trim rattles, warning messages, a frozen iDrive or sat-nav, a dead reversing camera, or a powered tailgate that creaks or will not latch.
- Which cars: all generations, mostly the E70 and F15. G05 evidence is mixed: What Car?'s 2026 survey of cars up to five years old ranked petrol and plug-in hybrid G05s second of 16 luxury cars, but 40% of diesel owners reported a fault, mostly bodywork, exhaust or engine; Auto Express's 2021 Driver Power survey put the G05 near the bottom for reliability.
- Why: What Car? traces wet E70 carpets to a blocked or broken rear washer pipe and says the rear lights can leak. It says dealer software updates often cure E70 and F15 electrical faults, and lists a new tailgate latch and rear camera as known F15 fixes.
- Fix: clear or replace the washer pipe and reseal leaking lights; read the fault memory with BMW-level diagnostics and update software before replacing parts.
- DIY difficulty: 2/5 for checks; 4/5 for diagnosis
- Check when buying: feel the carpets and look inside the rear lights; test iDrive, sat-nav, phone pairing, cameras, sensors, tailgate, soft-close doors, seats and panoramic roof. On a G05, check Apple CarPlay is fitted.
- Evidence: What Car?'s E70, F15 and G05 reliability reviews and 2026 luxury car survey; Auto Express's F15 and G05 reviews (many F15 owner complaints were electrical); Autocar's E70 guide (electrics second only to axles and suspension in warranty claims; panoramic roofs can fail).
8. Brake-unit and hybrid-battery recalls (G05)
Label: Confirmed recall R/2024/383 (plus R/2021/054, R/2024/119, R/2024/414, R/2020/283, R/2020/298 and R/2022/064)
- What you notice: a brake warning, a different pedal feel or longer stops; on plug-in hybrids there may be no warning before a battery fault.
- Which cars: integrated brake system windows 10/06/2019–20/11/2020 (R/2021/054), 31/07/2022–14/08/2024 (R/2024/383), 23/02/2023–01/08/2023 (R/2024/119) and 10/05/2024–04/09/2024 (R/2024/414); plug-in hybrids built 09/06/2020–08/01/2021 for the battery campaigns.
- Why: DVSA records a faulty hydraulic unit, contaminated electrical contacts and a poorly welded brake servo motor; in the batteries, particles or weld beads left in the cells could cause a short circuit.
- Fix: free dealer work: software and, if needed, a new brake unit; battery testing and cell or module replacement.
- DIY difficulty: 5/5 (dealer-only safety work)
- Check when buying: get the VIN printout and test the brakes on a quiet road. On a 45e or 50e, check it charges on the supplied cable, shows a believable electric range and has no hybrid warnings.
- Evidence: DVSA records above; Auto Express's used G05 review, which summarises the early brake and battery recalls.
Recalls (DVSA data)
These are the X5 records in the DVSA recalls file (downloaded 2026-10-07) built during E70, F15 or G05 production, summarised in our own words. We have not yet run our own analysis of DVSA's anonymised MOT data for the X5, so we quote no pass rates. Two independent analyses of DVSA MOT results (motdata.uk, 2024 tests; Motorwise, first attempts at 2025 tests) and the guides above point to these checks. motdata.uk's overall failure list also counts the original 2000–2006 X5, so some items lean towards older cars.
- Suspension joints, bushes and springs: worn pins, bushes and joints top motdata.uk's failure list for 2007–2012 registrations (E70-era cars), and broken or weakened springs also show up on 2009–2010 cars. Motorwise flags front suspension ball joints on 2014 cars. Autocar says E70 bushes typically need replacing at around 90,000 miles.
- Tyres: damaged tyres and exposed cords lead the list for 2014-on (F15 and G05) cars, low tread also appears in the overall list, and Motorwise names rear tyre condition the top failure for most registration years. Autocar warns that run-flats are hard on the alloys, especially the inner rims.
- Gaiters and dust covers: split driveshaft CV-joint boots and suspension-joint dust covers both feature in the overall failure list; dust covers rank second on 2007–2008 cars.
- Lights: failed indicators stand out on 2012–2013 cars; headlamp aim and other failed lamps are also on the list.
- Parking brake: low parking-brake efficiency is in the overall list (it ranks highest on older, first-generation cars), and Autocar warns that the E70's electronic handbrake can stick on.
- Screen washers: washers that do not work or deliver too little fluid are a listed failure.
- Diesel engine warning light: Motorwise lists a lit warning lamp among the leading failures for 2014-registered cars.
These are condition checks, not predictions. Read the car's full record on the GOV.UK MOT history service and look for repeat advisories.
Buying one? Our checklist
- Run the registration through the GOV.UK recall checker, then ask a BMW dealer for a VIN printout showing the airbag, EGR, steering, brake and battery campaigns closed.
- Read the MOT history for repeat suspension, tyre, parking-brake, lamp and warning-light advisories.
- Arrive before the engine has been started. Listen for chain rattle and watch for rough running or smoke, especially on an E70 diesel.
- Look at the rear ride height after the car has stood, listen to the air-suspension compressor and ask for any air-spring invoices.
- Check that all four tyres are the correct size, ideally the same make with similar tread, and inspect the inner rims for kerb and run-flat damage.
- On the test drive, make slow full-lock turns both ways and accelerate from low speed and from about 30mph; any shudder or jerking needs a transfer-case diagnosis before you buy.
- Drive the car from cold and fully warm to judge the gearbox; on an E70, ask about gearbox software updates and the early front-propshaft campaign.
- Test every electrical feature: iDrive, cameras, sensors, powered tailgate, soft-close doors, seats, panoramic roof and phone connection. Feel the carpets, look inside the rear lights for water and check the roof for dents from roof boxes or bike racks.
- On an xDrive40e, 45e or 50e, check that it charges on the supplied cable, shows a believable electric range and has no hybrid warnings.
- Ask for an invoiced service history, the number of keys and whether it has towed, then book an independent inspection with a BMW-level diagnostic scan.
Running costs
- Tax, registered 1 March 2001 to 31 March 2017 (E70, most F15s): based on the CO2 figure on the V5C. On current GOV.UK rates, the official F15 figures quoted by Auto Express put a 30d (162g/km) in band G at £275 a year, a 40d (166g/km) in band H at £325, a 50i (242g/km) in band L at £760 and a 40e (77g/km) in band A at £20.
- Tax, registered from 1 April 2017 (late F15s, all G05s): £200 a year, plus £440 a year for five years from the second tax payment if the list price was over £40,000. Every G05 was well over that (the range started at £57,495 in 2018, says Auto Express), so expect £640 a year until the supplement ends.
- Fuel: Auto Express lists official F15 figures from 50.4mpg (rear-drive 25d) and 45.6mpg (30d and 40d) down to 25.4mpg (X5 M). Plug-in hybrids depend on charging: its 45e long-termer usually managed 40–45 electric miles a charge (BMW claimed 50–54) and averaged 40.1mpg; its 50e test saw about 50 electric miles in winter and 25.9mpg on petrol-only miles.
- Servicing: condition-based, at most every 24 months or 18,000 miles on an F15. Auto Express's used F15 guide quoted £140–£497 (25d), £159–£519 (30d) and £167–£544 (40e); its 2021 G05 review quoted £350–£435 for a diesel oil service, due about every 16,000 miles. All F15 and G05 engines use timing chains, not cambelts; F15 diesels need AdBlue.
- Tyres: big wheels are common, M Sport G05s have run-flats and no G05 came with a spare wheel (Auto Express). Replace tyres in matching sets to protect the xDrive system.
- Insurance: varies widely by engine, trim and driver, so get a quote for the exact car.
