30-second verdict

The A3 shares most of its mechanical parts with the VW Golf, so it shares the Golf's known issues. The main ones are:

An 8V 1.4 or 1.5 TFSI manual with full history is the sensible choice.

Recalls

These are some of the most relevant safety recalls in the DVSA recalls database for the A3. Dates and build windows are as DVSA lists them. Recall work is free at an Audi dealer.

Check the exact car by registration on the GOV.UK recall checker (https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-recall) before you buy. Other A3 recalls exist, and only a registration or VIN check tells you whether a particular car is affected and whether the work has been done.

Common advisories to check before buying

Method and limits: C4R calculated these figures from DVSA's anonymised 2024 MOT results. Pass rate is P / (P + F + PRS) for normal Class 4 and 7 tests. Results are de-duplicated by test, low-volume rows are suppressed, and DVSA model labels are standardised into a model family. These figures describe tested cars as a group; they do not predict the condition of one vehicle or prove that every trim and generation performs the same way.
