P0193: Fuel rail pressure sensor “A” circuit high
The ECU sees the fuel-rail pressure sensor signal above its permitted electrical range.
What P0193 means
The ECU sees the fuel-rail pressure sensor signal above its permitted electrical range. “Circuit high” describes the input voltage and does not automatically mean that the fuel itself is over-pressurised.
Can I still drive?
Arrange prompt diagnosis because the fallback strategy can cause limp mode, poor response, stalling or a no-start. A short, gentle trip may be reasonable only when the warning remains steady amber and starting, idle and throttle response are normal. Stop and recover the vehicle if it stalls, starts badly, runs roughly, loses safe acceleration, displays another serious warning, or smells or leaks fuel.
Symptoms
- Engine-management light.
- Reduced power, hesitation or limp mode.
- Extended cranking, stalling or no-start.
- No constant symptom where the connector or loom fault is intermittent.
Common causes
- Signal wire shorted to the reference supply or battery voltage.
- Open signal or sensor-earth circuit.
- Loose, wet, corroded or heat-damaged connector or wiring.
- Internally failed rail-pressure sensor.
- Less commonly, an ECU input fault or genuine model-specific pressure-control problem.
Safe first checks
- Save all codes and freeze-frame data. Switch the ignition off before checking that the plug is secure or inspecting the nearby loom for broken insulation, stretched wires, corrosion or melting. Note whether several “sensor circuit high” codes appeared together, which can suggest a shared-circuit issue. Do not short pins as a test, and never loosen a common-rail sensor, rail or high-pressure pipe at home.
Typical UK fix cost
Expect approximately £70–£160 for diagnosis. Minor connector or wiring repair may be £100–£300 all-in; sensor replacement may be around £180–£450 all-in. Extensive loom repair, an integrated rail/sensor or an ECU fault can cost more. Pump replacement should not be based on this code alone.

This is a generic OBD-II code used across many makes and models. The exact test thresholds, component layout and repair route vary by engine and manufacturer, so check vehicle-specific technical information before ordering parts.

A diagnostic trouble code identifies a system or circuit to investigate. It does not prove that a named part has failed. Preserve freeze-frame data and seek a vehicle-specific diagnosis before clearing the code.
