P0133: Oxygen sensor circuit slow response, Bank 1 Sensor 1
The upstream Bank 1 sensor is responding to mixture changes more slowly than the computer expects.
What P0133 means
The upstream Bank 1 sensor is responding to mixture changes more slowly than the computer expects. The cause may be an ageing sensor, but an exhaust leak, wiring problem or engine fuelling fault can also make the response appear slow.
Can I still drive?
This is not usually a stop-now fault when the light is steady and the car drives normally, but it should be diagnosed soon. Delayed fuel correction can increase fuel use and emissions. Stop if the light flashes or the engine develops a heavy misfire, major power loss or strong fuel smell.
Symptoms
- Engine-management light with otherwise normal driving
- Reduced fuel economy
- Mild hesitation or slower acceleration
- Rough idle or misfire in some cases
Common causes
- Aged, contaminated or sluggish upstream sensor
- Weak heater operation or damaged wiring and terminals
- Exhaust leak before or near the sensor
- Intake or vacuum leak
- Fuel-pressure, injector or airflow-metering problem
Safe first checks
- Save codes and freeze-frame data. Inspect the cold harness and connector, then look and listen for obvious intake or exhaust leaks without approaching hot or moving parts. Check for related heater, fuel-trim and misfire codes. A single voltage snapshot cannot prove a slow response; the warm sensor trace must be assessed under the correct operating conditions.
Typical UK fix cost
About £90–£350 for diagnosis and a typical repair. If testing confirms only a replaceable lambda sensor, a broad market guide is £110–£266; seized sensors, difficult access, leaks or wiring work can cost more.
Related models
This is a generic OBD-II code used across many makes and models. The exact test thresholds, component layout and repair route vary by engine and manufacturer, so check vehicle-specific technical information before ordering parts.

A diagnostic trouble code identifies a system or circuit to investigate. It does not prove that a named part has failed. Preserve freeze-frame data and seek a vehicle-specific diagnosis before clearing the code.
