P0121: Throttle/pedal position sensor or switch “A” range/performance

The position signal is present, but the engine computer considers it stuck, outside the expected operating relationship or inconsistent with another throttle signal or engine data.

What P0121 means

The position signal is present, but the engine computer considers it stuck, outside the expected operating relationship or inconsistent with another throttle signal or engine data. This is a plausibility or performance fault, rather than simply a voltage that is always too high or too low.

Can I still drive?

Abnormal accelerator response is safety-critical. Recover the vehicle if it enters limp mode, stalls, surges, accelerates inconsistently or responds poorly to the pedal. With only a steady amber lamp and entirely normal response, make no more than a cautious trip for diagnosis. An intermittent fault can return without warning.

Symptoms

  • Engine-management or reduced-power warning.
  • Flat spots, hesitation or jerking.
  • Poor acceleration.
  • Erratic or high idle.
  • Stalling or difficult starting.
  • Increased fuel consumption.
  • Symptoms confined to a particular pedal opening if a sensor track is worn.

Common causes

  • Worn, sticking or contaminated position sensor.
  • Throttle plate restricted by deposits.
  • Disagreement between redundant position-sensor tracks.
  • Intermittent connector or loom fault.
  • Poor 5-volt reference or earth.
  • Incorrect throttle adaptation after related work.
  • Electronic throttle-body or actuator fault; control-unit fault rarely.

Safe first checks

  • Preserve codes and freeze-frame information. With the engine off, inspect the intake tract, throttle connector and visible loom without forcing the throttle plate. Check for companion throttle, pedal, airflow or reference-voltage codes. If the scan tool supports it, position channels can be observed during a slow pedal movement while stationary; they should change smoothly and keep the manufacturer-specified relationship. Cleaning and relearning must follow the maker’s procedure.

Typical UK fix cost

Approximately £100–£500 for diagnosis followed by cleaning/adaptation, wiring repair, a separate sensor or an integrated throttle body. Difficult access and deeper electrical faults can push the bill higher.

Related models

This is a generic OBD-II code used across many makes and models. The exact test thresholds, component layout and repair route vary by engine and manufacturer, so check vehicle-specific technical information before ordering parts.

A diagnostic trouble code identifies a system or circuit to investigate. It does not prove that a named part has failed. Preserve freeze-frame data and seek a vehicle-specific diagnosis before clearing the code.
